Military Excellence Competition Team

Teams

Iron Man

This is one of the most demanding MEC events. The focus is to compete in several events to exhibit overall physical ability. Each competition has its own set of particular events which can include push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, rope climbs, 5k runs, and 500 meter swims. Members of our Ironman team must be able to perform well in all these events and consequently their training is varied and intense.

10-K

This event is the long distance run. Traditionally the members must run 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), but this varies with the particular competition. While the course at Holy Cross is a brutal uphill full 10 kilometers, Cornell is a flatter, 5 mile run around scenic Beebee Lake. While the distance varies, the focus of the training does not. It is as simple as getting out in Boston and running three times a week throughout the semester.

Swim

The MEC swim team competes in several swimming events, though all of them are relays. These events include all the strokes and distances vary with the particular competition. The team trains on dry land twice a week, and then finds time to hit the pool an additional two times a week.

Basketball

The basketball team competes in the basketball tournaments held at the MEC competitions, which bring teams in from all over. The rules are exactly like competitive 5 on 5 basketball. The team does physical training twice a week, then finds two practices a week on the court. The court time training ranges from simple shooting proficiency drills to running offense/defense drills. The team’s most infamous success if the winning of the 2004 RPI Basketball Tournament, which entailed five games straight, with only five team members and no subs.

Relay

The bread and butter of this team is the 4 X 400 relay. This is usually the final event at the competitions and garners a lot of excitement. This event is fast and brings the crowd to its feet. There are however other relays run at these competitions. Distance medleys, 4 X 800, and 4 X 200 are also run. This team is made up of the fastest members the MEC team has to offer. These people are usually taken from the Ironman and 10K teams.
