Technische Universität Dresden (TUD)

The Technische Universität Dresden (TUD) is one of the oldest and most prestigious technical universities in Germany. Its name now only partially describes its mission, however. Since German reunification, the TUD has doubled in size by incorporating a full array of humanities, social sciences, and “pure” science departments as well.

TUD, like all German universities, does not publish a catalog of course descriptions or its equivalent for students to consult prior to arrival in Dresden, nor do students register for classes through a central registrar’s office. Instead, TUD publishes a Vorlesungsverzeichnis, which lists course titles, faculty names, and university telephone numbers. Individual departments publish an updated Kommentiertes Vorlesungsverzeichnis, which contains full course descriptions, meeting times, and class locations. These booklets are available approximately one week prior to the start of classes, and students may purchase copies for a small fee. Some departments also publish this information on the web at www.tu-dresden.de

The academic year at the TUD is divided into winter and summer semesters, which are roughly equivalent to American fall and spring semesters. The fall semester runs from early October to late March, and the spring semester runs from early April to late September. Courses for the fall semester start in the second week of October and last until the end of January. February is set aside for exams. Students on the Boston University program who are staying only for the fall semester take their final exams mid to end of December. Spring semester courses start during the first week of April and last until the middle of July, followed by exams. Students attending the spring semester on the Boston University program will be able to complete the regularly scheduled semester at the TUD.

Housing

Program participants live in university dormitories. Students receive room and board stipends, which may be used to buy food at student cafeterias, or students can shop at grocery stores or markets in Dresden and prepare their meals in the dormitory kitchens.
