  Apply FAQs

Q: What are the average high school grade point average (GPA) and standardized test scores for incoming freshmen?
A: An academic profile of the incoming class is available here.
Q: What tests are required?
A: Students planning to enter Boston University as freshmen should be aware of the following test policies:

Students planning to take the SAT will be required to submit the test with the writing section. Results of previous administrations of the SAT will not meet the testing requirement for admission.

Students taking the ACT will be required to submit the version with the optional writing section. Results that do not include the writing section will not meet the testing requirement for admission.

All freshman applicants for September 2006 will be required to submit the results of two SAT Subject Tests in different subject areas. For applicants to the College of Fine Arts, two Subject Tests are recommended. Applicants to any of the Accelerated Medical or Dental Programs should consult this site in late December for more specific information on required SAT Subject Tests. Please be aware that the results of standardized tests must be submitted to Boston University directly from either the College Board or ACT, even if the scores are recorded on the student's high school transcript.
Q: If I am an international student, do I have to take the SAT?
A: Yes, you do have to take the SAT. You will also be required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
Q: What is Boston University's policy for admission of homeschooled students?
A: Boston University encourages applications from students with a wide variety of backgrounds, including homeschooled students. The Board of Admissions attempts to be as fair as possible in evaluating these applicants and ensuring that they are given every consideration in the application process. It is important to note that we maintain the same academic standards for all applicants (please see Admissions Requirements and Standards). However, we acknowledge that the transcripts of homeschooled students may be different than those of traditional high school students. Along with their applications, homeschooled students should submit as much information as possible describing their curriculum, which may include course descriptions, texts read, and skill levels completed. While these are not requirements, this information can be very helpful to the Board as we examine a student's ability in the five academic areas of math, science, social science, English, and foreign language. For more information regarding the review of homeschooled applicants, please contact the Office of Admissions at 617-353-2300.
