  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship  
  The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship acknowledges those students who have embraced the ideals of one of Boston University's most prominent alumni, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (GRS'55, Hon.'59). The scholarship provides four-year, full-tuition awards for academically gifted students with proven leadership abilities and a strong commitment to social justice and community involvement.

Each Scholar must complete a minimum of 100 community service hours each year in conjunction with Boston University's Howard Thurman Center. The Center serves as the hub of multicultural life on campus, supporting student organizations and sponsoring events that foster ongoing conversations about the common ground shared by all mankind.

Recipients' average high school GPA: 3.71
Average rank in class: top 5 percent
Average SAT score: 2014
Average ACT score: 30

How to Apply

Each candidate must submit a complete application for admission to one of the undergraduate degree programs at Boston University together with the nomination form and a 500-word essay. The application for admission, essay, and nomination form must all be submitted by December 1.

Essay Question
Each candidate must submit a 500-word essay describing how the following quotation has affected him or her personally. Candidates are encouraged to use specific examples from their own lives in their essays.

Please submit your essay via e-mail to mlkschol@bu.edu as an attached Microsoft Word document (.doc or .rtf extension). For identification purposes, please include your name and the words "MLK Essay" in the subject line. Please include your name and birth date or Social Security number on the essay.

Please Note:
You must indicate that you are a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship applicant on your Boston University Common Application Supplement by typing “MK” in the “Office Use Only” box at the bottom of the Supplement.
