Consultation on Class Scheduling

A Message from Associate Dean Susan Jackson

As part of Dean Sapiro’s College-wide initiative in curriculum review and improvement, I will make myself available throughout the month of September for scheduled consultations with individual chairs and directors (and their departmental curriculum teams) on “Effective and Efficient Class Scheduling.”

These one-hour consultations will be customized to address any questions and concerns, large or small, you may have about 1) your role as Chair in managing the class scheduling process, and 2) the range of challenges you face in working to match your department’s course schedule to your mission and aspirations in undergraduate and graduate education.

You may wish to invite your faculty associates and staff administrators with frontline scheduling responsibilities to join us for this consultation. Please feel encouraged to include them: Insofar as successful class scheduling is a team effort, talking together in real time can itself serve the interests of effectiveness, efficiency, and team-building. In cases where you’d prefer in the first instance to meet alone (for example, if you foresee the discussion’s touching on sensitive personnel matters), we can plan to follow up with larger group meetings.

Consultations will be arranged for all interested Chairs and Program Directors on a first-come, first-served basis. To schedule your consultation, please contact me directly at sjackson@bu.edu or 617-353-2409, indicating a range of possible meeting times, as well as your primary goals for the meeting, any specific points you want to cover, and the names of any colleagues who will join us.
