The Center for Defense Journalism was established at Boston University in 1988 with the unique mission of preparing journalists to report and write competently on military affairs, national security issues and strategic problems. The Center currently maintains a small staff of graduate students who edit and publish the Center's on-line journal Defense Media Review, a survey of the national security press with analysis and commentary. The Center also maintains a highly specialized library and reference center on military and defense related information to assist journalists conducting research projects.
Today, in the United States in particular, there are very few journalists with the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to report on defense and national security issues. Moreover, dissimilar types of international conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kashmir, West Africa and Colombia continue to occur at an alarming rate. In order to properly keep the public informed regarding these events, news organizations require journalists trained in the complex areas comprising defense and national security reporting.
The Center for Defense Journalism has addressed this need through providing a central focus and geographic location to prepare journalists interested in covering military matters. In order to assist journalists covering these issues, the Center operates the Defense Information Service. This service provides news reporters and editors with access to high quality defense information through related web sites and upon request, directly from the Center's staff.
