Legal English for Practitioners (EN 006)

Legal English for Practitioners was designed to help you develop the language proficiency and cultural background knowledge necessary to succeed in a professional legal environment in English. The program represents a totally unique approach to the study of legal English, which focuses on meeting the special law and language communication needs of international lawyers and law students. Co-taught by a professional English language teacher and a practicing attorney, this program has four major components:
Legal Sessions
Receive legal instruction from a practicing attorney, Monday through Thursday mornings for two hours per day. These sessions will feature an overview of American law and practice, including the law of commerce.
Language Sessions
Learn the English language skills that are essential to the effective use of written and spoken legal English.
Tours and visiting lecturers
Tour a Federal Courthouse and observe court procedings, visit the Boston University School of Law's Law Library, and listen to guest lecturers such as a law professor from the University's LLM program.
Workshops
Improve your lawyering skills through our legal workshops, which take place on Monday and Wednesday afternoons for an hour and a half per day. These workshops will be co-taught by the class attorney and your CELOP English language instructor. They will focus on negotiating a contract and engaging in a mock trial.
Entrance Requirements
This program is open to individuals with an advanced level of English, plus some previous academic or professional experience in the area of law. In addition to the usual application materials, please also send a copy of your CV or resume and a brief statement of purpose (300 to 500 words) describing your professional experience and what you hope to get out of this course.
Studying in CELOP's Legal English for Practitioners program was an important career move for me.
