Pre-MBA English (EN 028, EN 038, EN 048)

Based on a program developed in collaboration with Boston University's School of Management, Pre-MBA English is an intensive English program designed to prepare you for the rigors of a graduate business school environment. The program is open to those entering an MBA or graduate diploma program, as well as business professionals who plan to apply to an MBA program in the future. When registering for this program, you may enroll in the full 6-week program, consisting of three, 2-week modules, or you may select any two consecutive modules.

Module 1: The Business Context
Investigates the global, national and regional environments in which business is conducted, including legal, political and geographic influences.

Module 2: Managing the Enterprise
Covers current management theory and practice, including issues related to the management of people, information and finances.

Module 3: Marketing the Organization and its Products/Services
Explores traditional marketing concepts, consumer behavior topics and issues such as branding, positioning and public relations.

All modules include the following components:

Language and Communication Skills
This program will help you build the English language skills that are essential to being successful in your MBA or graduate business diploma program. You will improve your speaking and listening by discussing business cases, developing oral presentations and listening to management lectures. You will learn to take notes, identify critical material and explain your points in clear and accurate English, in speech and in writing.

Business Concepts
Working from materials such as case studies, textbooks, the Internet, radio broadcasts, and articles from business publications such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, you will learn the business concepts, current issues, and vocabulary of the corporate world. You will also develop the communication skills you need to succeed in an MBA program--effective presentation skills, discussion techniques, team meetings and more.

Academic Preparation and Advising
Your instructors will provide insight into the US university system and American professors' expectations of their students. You will also have access to CELOP's extensive advising services. If you are applying to an MBA or graduate diploma program, our advisors will guide you through the process. If you have already been admitted, our advisors will help you make final preparations to begin your studies.

Tours and Visiting Lecturers
A core component of this program is access to business professionals and management faculty. They provide the real-world perspective you need to fully prepare for your MBA experience. In addition to hosting guest lecturers, your class will also make site visits to local companies, government offices and other places of interest.

What past students have said about this program

M MiyauchiThe overwhelming internationality of my class exposed me to totally diverse points of view both professionally and personally. This course truly provided me not only with good opportunities to prepare for my MBA study  but also with the most precious asset, the invaluable lifelong friendships with my classmates!

—M. Miyauchi, Tokyo, Japan

StefanPrior to my graduate studies I spent 4 weeks at CELOP attending the Pre-MBA class. This class was a very good investment of my time. Not only did I improve my English language skills, especially my speaking and presentation skills, but also got used to American teaching methods, which are far different from those that I know. Thus, I feel much better prepared for my graduate studies than before attending CELOP.

—Stefan T., Germany

Joyce DiaminiSome things in life end up being lifetime treasures, and that was my CELOP Pre-MBA experience.

The staff was so welcoming and supportive in many ways, and the instructor really helped us sharpen our skills. The academic skills I gained at CELOP made my transition to my respective university easy and the culture shock was no longer there. My course work was more manageable and I got very good grades during my first semester, all attributable to the knowledge and skills learnt at CELOP.

We also mingled with each other outside the classroom and shared our countries' lifestyles, traditions and cultures.

Boston will always be like home. We were like family, yet before CELOP we were strangers.

Joyce Dlamini, Swaziland

I took the Pre-MBA English program at CELOP in the summer of 2006. Our instructor helped us get oriented in our current positions and for our future business studies. I also made good friends from among my classmates, who were outstanding. From them, I not only learned different cultures but also gained great inspiration. We shared our life and work experiences, which are really priceless for me. Now, I am an MBA student in Brandeis University . I have more confidence and feel more comfortable when in class and even in my current community.

—Ya-Nan Chen, Taiwan

Through the course, I could attain the set of skills needed to deal with a rigorous MBA program, including but not limited to how to make effective presentations, how to work on cases, and how to build teamwork
with other talented students.

—T. Motoda, Japan
