Eligibility
Participation in the contest is open only to high school seniors who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or eligible non-citizens.

Scholarship Requirements

  1. Scholarships are awarded contingent upon application and acceptance to, and enrollment in, one of Boston University's degree-granting undergraduate Schools or Colleges.

  2. Renewal is contingent upon the student completing a minimum of 12 credits each semester with a Boston University grade point average of at least 3.0 for the preceding academic year.

  3. The student must enroll in at least one Latin or ancient Greek language course per semester for each of the first four semesters at Boston University.

  4. Total tuition awards (including the Latin Scholarship) may not exceed actual tuition charges, and total awards received from all sources may not exceed total cost of attendance. 7. The University reserves the right to revoke or rescind the award of the scholarship and/or the offer of admission as a result of information received by the University after the award/offer of admission related to academic or disciplinary misconduct or criminal act by the applicant prior to matriculation at the University.

The Examination
This fall, the examination will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2008 on the Boston University Campus. The schedule for the competition will be as follows:

8:30AM: Registration and Welcome, Science Center, 590-596 Commonwealth Avenue, Room 101
9:30-9:45AM: Students walked to exam site
9:45-10:45AM: Parents' Reception, Science Center, Room 101
12:00-12:30PM: Lunch, Science Center, Room 101

You can go online for directions to BU, for a campus map, and for a list of nearby hotels. For those participants driving to the event, complimentary parking will be available.

You should plan to arrive for on-site registration by 8:30 a.m. Please note that free parking will be provided.

The exam, as in the past, is challenging, with questions on grammar, civilization, and reading comprehension. While we do not offer sample questions from past exams, the difficulty level of the Advanced Placement exam is a good guide for preparation.

Unfortunately, we cannot offer a make-up exam. Boston University does, however, offer a number of other merit-based scholarships. Further information is available from the Office of Admissions.

Registration
The registration form is available on-line. Students must register by November 3, 2008 in order to participate in the exam. Students who live more than 200 miles from Boston and wish to take the exam where they go to school must also register by this deadline. In addition, a relevant school official must request, following the links on this website, for the local administration of the exam as well. The deadline for the school requests is Wednesday, October 29, 2008. Note that the exam must be administered on Saturday, November 8, 2008.

There is a non-refundable registration fee of $15.00, which can also be paid on-line. The registration fee can be waived if a student demonstrates financial hardship. Documentation from the student's guidance counselor is required.

After registration, students will receive an e-mail confirmation including the site of their exam as well as other practical information.

Awards
Admitted students with the highest scores on the examination and whose high school records demonstrate high academic achievement will be considered for four-year scholarships to Boston University. For the 2007-2008 competition, the following tuition awards were extended:

  • Palma Aurea - One four-year, full tuition scholarship
  • Palma Argentea - Four four-year, half tuition scholarships

Off-Site Examinations
We will also entertain requests from schools outside of the Northeast (at least 200 miles from Boston) to administer the scholarship exam on their premises when proper administration and monitoring procedures are in place. If your school is interested, a relevant school official must fill out a request form, following this link. Arrangements to administer the exam must be made no later than Wednesday, October 29, 2008. Note that the exam must be administered on Saturday, November 8, 2008. Please also note that we encourage students to take the exam in Boston when possible, so they can visit the campus and learn more about Boston University. On the day of the exam, in addition to the two-hour test itself, we are planning a full schedule of events from 8:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. for participants and their families, including breakfast and lunch.

If you have any questions, please contact the Department of Classical Studies at 617-353-2427, or email the Faculty Coordinator, Professor Mark Alonge at: latcomp@bu.edu.
