Refunds
Refund Requests To obtain a refund from a credit balance because of overpayment or withdrawal, a refund request must be submitted in writing to Student Accounting Services. Refunds will be processed in seven to eleven business days, if the credit balance is valid. Refunds are issued in the form of a check, unless the credit on a student account is the result of a credit card payment. When that is the case, the credit will be refunded back to the credit card account upon written request. Students receiving financial aid must submit a refund request to the Office of Financial Assistance before a refund can be processed. Graduate students receiving financial aid should submit a refund request to the financial aid officer at their school.
Federal (Title IV) Refunds to students In compliance with federal regulations, all Federal Financial Aid recipients whose total federal funds exceed allowable semester expenses will be mailed a federal refund automatically, unless the student or parent borrower (for PLUS loans) authorizes the University to retain the funds to cover other expenses. Allowable expenses include, and are limited to, tuition, fees, and contract room and board. Since federal regulations prohibit the University from using excess federal funds for nonallowable charges (including medical insurance, late fees, convenience points, library fines, and prior balances) a federal refund may result in an outstanding balance. Students and parent borrowers (for PLUS loans) can prevent this by completing a Federal Financial Aid Credit Authorization Form and submitting it to Student Accounting Services. Students can file a Federal Financial Aid Credit Authorization on the Student Link, download the form (see below) or request to have one mailed by calling Student Accounting Services at (617)353-2264.
