ResNet Fee Frequently Asked Questions

What services does a ResNet subscription provide?

Subscribing to ResNet provides fully functional access to high speed network ports in rooms and throughout the residences, and access to password protected resources from within the residences. Password protected resources include campus e-mail, courseware, Student Link functions such as online class registration, and other personal communication and information services. Without a ResNet subscription, you will be unable to register and use your personal computer on ResNet, or to gain access to password protected resources from ResNet, such as those itemized above.

How much does it cost to subscribe to ResNet?

The price per subscriber for access to ResNet is only $320 per year. Note that consumers commonly pay several hundred dollars a year to subscribe to services providing less than a tenth the capacity ResNet offers each resident at Boston University.

How do I subscribe to ResNet?

Students assigned to on-campus residences will be automatically subscribed to ResNet at a fee of $320.

How do I unsubscribe to ResNet?

If you do not wish to subscribe to ResNet, you can unsubscribe using one these options:
  • Student Link at www.bu.edu/studentlink. Starting at the main menu, select "Money Matters," then "ResNet Fee Waiver." An Academic Computing System (ACS) account is required to access the system.
  • Contact Student Accounting Services at (617)353-2264 to decline the ResNet subscription.

What if I waive the fee?

Waiving the fee cancels and disables your subscription to ResNet. Once on campus, you can subscribe to ResNet immediately at any time from any computer connected to the network.

Residents who choose to subscribe to ResNet while on campus rather than in advance will be offered the opportunity to be guided through the subscription process whenever they attempt to register a personal computer on ResNet or to gain access to password protected services from ResNet. These services include campus e-mail, courseware, Student Link functions such as online registration, and other personal communication and information services. Specialized Web pages offer quick and convenient access to the subscription process.

You can also subscribe by going directly to this web page.

Can I receive full or partial credit for the fee if I terminate my subscription or withdraw from the housing system before the spring semester?

You must waive your ResNet subscription on or before the payment deadline of August 13, 2009 in order for your student account to be credited.

Will I be charged the full ResNet fee if I'm a resident only during the spring semester?

Students who become residents during the spring semester will be charged $160 to subscribe to ResNet - half the annual fee.

Can I share a friend's or roommate's ResNet subscription instead of establishing my own?

Without a ResNet subscription of your own, you will be unable to register and use your personal computer on ResNet, or to gain access to password protected resources from ResNet, including campus e-mail, courseware, Student Link functions such as online registration, and other personal communication and information services.

Will guests be able to use ResNet?

Guests may use ResNet without a subscription for occasional and responsible access to the Internet. Guests who are not Boston University students who wish to connect their own PCs to ResNet may be sponsored by a resident who subscribes to ResNet. However, sponsors will be held accountable for their guests' use of ResNet

Can I subscribe to ResNet if I'm a summer term resident?

ResNet fees are waived for all summer term residents; there is no need to subscribe.

Who should I contact if I have other questions about subscribing to ResNet?

Please contact Student Accounting Services at (617)353-2264 or via email at studenta@bu.edu.
