ADVANCED STANDING DMD PROGRAM FOR INTERNATIONALLY-TRAINED DENTISTS

The Advanced Standing DMD Program at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine is a two-year course of study leading to a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree for dentists trained outside the United States of America.

Program participants pursue highly intensive clinical training while simultaneously following a rigorous academic curriculum. Advanced Standing students capitalize on the location of the dental school in the heart of Boston through community outreach and research opportunities.

CAAPID On-line Application

Applications to Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine’s Advanced Standing DMD Program must be submitted through the common application service CAAPID (Centralized Application for Advanced Placement for International Dentists). The CAAPID application is administered by the American Dental Education Association (ADEA).  CAAPID allows international dentists to submit an online application and a set of credentials that will be distributed by ADEA to the Admissions Office at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. Supplemental materials may be requested from selected applicants.  All submitted materials become part of the admissions file and cannot be returned.

Application Dates and Deadline

Application materials for Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine should be received by February 1. 

  • Applications for Class Entering 2010:  The ADEA CAAPID application is available June 2009 to February 2010.
  • Applications for Class Entering 2011:  The ADEA CAAPID application is available April 2010 to February 2011.  


Early submission of the application is recommended, as it enables early review and consideration. 

Application Fee


After receiving of the application record from CAAPID, the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine Office of Advanced Standing Admissions will contact applicants via email. Included in the email is a link to an online application fee payment page. Applicants pay the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine application fee online in via credit card or debit card.

  • The application fee is $70 for U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents.
  • The application fee is $100 for non-U.S. Citizens and non-permanent U.S. Residents.

Eligibility

The international equivalent of the DMD dental degree is a prerequisite for consideration for admission to the Advanced Standing DMD Program for applicants whose dental degrees were conferred from accredited institutions outside the United States. An applicant must have earned the dental degree and hold a final diploma prior to applying to the Boston University program.  Provisional degrees and certificates are not sufficient.   

Citizenship

Applicants to the Advanced Standing DMD Program at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine may be foreign nationals, United States Citizens, or Permanent Residents of the United States. Matriculation requires compliance with Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) regulations as determined by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.  Boston University International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) website has detailed information. 

Admissions Factors

In considering applications, the Advanced Standing Admissions Committee takes into account the applicant’s academic preparation, prior dental school performance, National Board Dental Examination Part I, and English language ability, as demonstrated by the TOEFL score. Also considered are factors such as an applicant’s dental experience and motivation for the study of dentistry. Letters of recommendation from a dental school dean and faculty are important elements in the evaluation.  The Admissions Committee contacts selected applicants regarding interview invitations. A personal interview is required for admission, but does not guarantee acceptance.

Interviews

Applicants who are selected for an interview are contacted by the Office of Advanced Standing Admissions. Applicants may interview only if invited.   An in-person interview at the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine is required for admission.  Each interviewee is responsible for his or her own visa, travel and expenses.  An interview does not guarantee admission. Only those applicants invited for an interview are able to meet with a member of the Admissions Committee. Due to the high volume of applications, applicants or prospective applicants can not be granted informational or informal interviews.  We are not able to accommodate tours outside of the interview cycle. We provide tours only to invited applicants participating in an interview. The dental school contains clinical facilities that are not accessible without authorization.  

Photograph


Applicants who are invited to interview should bring a small, recent photograph of themselves (a wallet-size picture of about 2X2 inches or 5X5 centimeters). The photograph should have the applicant's name and date of birth printed on the back, as well as "Advanced Standing Applicant". 

National Board Dental Examination, Part I

Advanced Standing DMD Program applicants must enter their results for the U.S. National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) Part 1 in the CAAPID application. Taking the NBDE Part 1 is required regardless of the applicant's country of residence.

Accepted Advanced Standing DMD Program applicants are required to submit the official NBDE score report to Boston University prior to matriculation.

English Language Requirements and TOEFL

Applicants whose first language is not English must record their most recent TOEFL score in the CAAPID  online application (the TOEFL score must be no more than two years old). Competitive TOEFL scores for the Advanced Standing DMD Program are:

  • 100 Internet-based TOEFL (iBT)
  • 600 Paper-based TOEFL

Accepted Advanced Standing DMD Program students are required to submit an official TOEFL score report prior to matriculation.  The Boston University Henry M. International Transcripts and Diplomas

All applicants for the Advanced Standing DMD Program must submit an ECE course-by-course detailed evaluation and translation of the final dental school transcript to CAAPID.  The ECE report must indicate an earned bachelor of dental science degree, at minimum.  Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine requires the use of ECE, or Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc.

Accepted Advanced Standing DMD Program students are required to submit an official ECE course-by-course transcript translation and evaluation prior to matriculation. Accepted Advanced Standing DMD Program students also must provide an original dental school transcript as well as a photocopy of the dental school diploma indicating the date the dental degree was earned. 

Accepted Applicants

Deposit
Applicants who are offered admission are required to submit a nonrefundable tuition deposit of $3,000. This tuition deposit confirms the candidate's intention to enroll in the program. The funds are applied to the student’s account at the University and are applied toward tuition for the initial semester. The deposit is payable by check or money order in U.S. dollars, to Boston University. The candidate's name must be noted on the check or money order. 

 

Official Qualifications Reports

Enrolling students must submit official reports directly from the testing agency or credential evaluator for the NBDE Part I, TOEFL*, and ECE course-by-course transcript evaluation prior to matriculation.*The Boston University Henry M. Transcript and Diploma

Enrolling students must send notarized copies of their original dental school diploma and transcripts to Boston University prior to matriculation.

International Student Documentation for Visa Application
Following enrollment confirmation, accepted foreign nationals submit personal and financial documentation which the Office of Admissions provides to the Boston University International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO). ISSO produces the appropriate document (Form I-20 or DS-2019) to enable entering international students to apply for a student visa.   

Medical History and Immunization Information

All enrolling students submit mandatory health and immunization information to Student Health Services.  All dental students must be in clinical compliance status as determined by Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, Boston University Student Health Services, and state and local requirements. 

Hepatitis Immunization
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts law requires all health care students to be immunized against hepatitis B or provide serologic proof of immunity. Hepatitis B immunization requires a three-dose regimen of vaccine, which must be completed prior to matriculation. Evidence of inoculation (all three doses) must be provided at matriculation.

Orientation

Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine holds mandatory orientation sessions during the first week of the program, in late July. Orientation includes administrative sessions, health and safety training, library research guidance, and social and networking opportunities. Orientation also provides detailed information about academic expectations, resources and programs.
