Campus Accessibility

Boston University is committed to providing equal and integrated access for individuals with disabilities to all the academic, social, cultural, and recreational programs we offer. In keeping with our commitment, the University has created this accessibility map of the Charles River Campus. Although the achievement of architectural access is a work in-progress for a campus as large, diverse, and historic as ours, this map provides the most accurate description of accessibility features available.

Please Note: The Campus Accessibility Map shows only those buildings and facilities that currently offer wheelchair access. For a complete map of the Boston University Charles River Campus, please visit the University Visitor Center.

If you would like a hard-copy of the Campus Accessibility Map, let us know.

Map Features

Travel routes between buildings are on well-kept sidewalks and open walkways. To the extent possible, curb cuts, which will allow users to plan the most efficient path of travel from one area of the campus to another, are marked on the map. Please notify the Office of Disability Services if you discover curb cuts that are blocked by vehicles or otherwise rendered impassable. You will find that most of the Charles River Campus is located on flat land. The top portion of the map provides Campus Landmarks and a Grade-Angle Profile. Additional map features include each building's accessible entrance location, automatic doors, audible traffic signals, and 24-hour campus emergency telephones. Though not indicated on the map, public pay telephones are available throughout the campus, and many are wheelchair-accessible.

The map also includes the location of TTY payphones as well as Audible Crosswalk Signals at the following intersections:

  • Intersection of Commonwealth Avenue with Buick and St. Paul Streets
    Crossing Commonwealth Avenue
  • Intersection of Commonwealth Avenue with St. Mary's Street at the Marsh Plaza
    Crossing Commonwealth Avenue
Walking at a normal pace on a flat, dry surface, the average adult travels at two miles per hour. Most manual or power-assisted wheelchairs keep pace without difficulty. As a guide for time and endurance, estimate that it will take about five minutes to travel 750 feet. A walk from one end of the campus to the other will take about one hour. During the winter months, changing surface conditions due to inclement weather can alter this estimate significantly.

Parking

Accessible parking spaces are available in all of the University Sticker Parking Lots, both indoor and outdoor. To arrange for University parking, visit the Office of Parking Services at 775 Commonwealth Avenue, second floor, or call (617) 353-2160.

HP/V on-street spaces are located in front of the following buildings:

  • Office of Disability Services, 19 Deerfield Street
  • George Sherman Union, 775 Commonwealth Avenue
  • Psychology Department, 64 Cummington Street
  • Case Physical Education Center, 285 Babcock Street
  • Intersection of Raleigh and Beacon Streets
Please note that anyone displaying a valid HP/V license plate or placard may park for free at any parking meter within the City of Boston as described under Article IV, Section 4, paragraph 3 of the Traffic Rules and Regulations-City of Boston (July 1, 1999).

The Boston University Shuttle (The BUS)

Throughout the year, the Boston University Shuttle provides all students, staff and faculty with transportation throughout each weekday. Traveling along Commonwealth Avenue and to the Boston University Medical Center, the shuttle buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts as part of a fully integrated system.

Admissions

If you are a prospective student planning a visit to Boston University, please contact the Admissions Visitors' Reception Center at (617) 353-2318 in order to arrange to meet with an admissions representative in an accessible location. Construction

Boston University has recently begun to undertake a number of large scale construction projects which will affect large portions of the campus. The projects currently underway, and others planned in the future, may modify accessible campus routes and impact parking. In an effort to provide the campus community with as much information as possible, Boston University has developed a website devoted to providing the campus community with alerts, updates, and other important information. You can even sigh up for e-mail alerts to be sent to you automatically.
