Federal regulations restrict Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) and National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant to U.S. citizens. All other federal aid is restricted to U.S. citizens and eligible permanent residents.
If you are asked to verify your status as a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, acceptable documentation includes both sides of one of the following:
- Documentation indicating U.S. Citizenship, i.e. birth certificate or U.S. passport
- Alien Registration Receipt Card: I-151 or I-551
- Departure Record: I-94
- Notice of Residency Approval: I-181 or 181b
- Other documentation from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (formerly I.N.S.)
The Office of Financial Assistance is unable to offer need-based University grant aid to international students.
Boston University requires international students applying for admission to present evidence of sufficient funds to cover all tuition, fees, books, and living expenses for their study at Boston University.
