Q: What should I wear?
A: You should feel comfortable wearing any clothes you choose. Some students, but only some, dress up for Shabbat with jackets and ties or nicer dresses/skirts, but come as you are!
Q: If I’m not Jewish or not registered with Hillel, am I allowed to come?
A: Of course. The Shabbat experience is designed for all Jewish students on campus and we would love to have you join us. Also, many non-Jewish students try out the Shabbat experience with friends/roommates or for the cultural experience. Everyone is welcome!
Q: What If I only want to come to services? Dinner?
A: Not a problem. Please check the times to make sure you know when services and dinner are.
Q: Are there also services on Saturday mornings?
A: Yes. There are always Orthodox services at 9:30am (preceded by Rabbi Polak’s class at 8:30am) and usually Conservative services (preceded by a light breakfast) at 10:00am.
Q: Is there any free food?
A: Yes.
- There are sometimes onegs or tisches Friday night after dinner with free snacks.
- Saturday morning services are always followed by Kiddush in the 2nd floor lounge at noon.
- We are hoping to offer an occasional Free Shabbat dinner (last year, we had one) so if you know anyone who would like to sponsor one, please have them contact Kip Lombardo.
- If you would like to be invited to the Rabbi’s house or to a student’s private Shabbat meal, please contact Rabbi Polak . Advance notice is always preferable.
Q: Can I pay with my ID? How much does a meal cost?
A: Yes! Not only that, you can even sign up online up to four weeks in advance. The only catch is that you have to do it in advance, before Friday at noon. In emergencies, we can accommodate a limited number of walk-ins but there is a $4 surcharge for the meal. Friday night meals cost $14.00, and Saturday lunch is $10.00 (payable by meals and/or meals, points, or with a credit card).
Q: What If I am vegetarian? Need gluten-free food? Have other dietary restrictions?
A: Vegetarian options are always available. Contact Dining Services at Hillel Dining for accommodation of other special needs...617-353-2947.
Q: Are the services led by a Rabbi?
A: All services are student-led. Our Rabbi and guest speakers give short talks during Friday night and Shabbat services and offer classes at other times during the week.
