Designating Beneficiaries

When you first enroll for Boston University benefits, you should designate a beneficiary for your accident insurance, retirement plan and life insurance coverage. Then, be sure to keep your beneficiary designations up to date.

  • Any individual or entity if you are not married, or if your spouse provides written, notarized consent to another beneficiary.

Benefits will be paid in the following order:

  • Your surviving spouse
  • Your estate

No, unless designated in a Qualified Domestic Relations Order.

Basic Life Insurance Plan

Group Supplemental Life Insurance Plan

Anyone, provided you have not previously made an irrevocable designation.

Benefits will be paid to your estate.

Yes, to a person or a trust.

Travel Accident Insurance Plan

Your beneficiary is the same as for your Basic Life Insurance, unless you elect otherwise.

Benefits will be paid to your estate.

Yes, to a person or a trust.

Personal and Family Accident Insurance Plan

Your beneficiary is the same as for your Basic Life Insurance, unless you elect otherwise.

Benefits will be paid to your estate.
