Cost of the Dental Health Plan

Covered dental services are organized into the following four categories:

Basic Services (see how you are covered)
Covered basic services include:

  • Preventive
    • Visits and exams (twice a year)
    • Cleanings (twice a year) including scaling and polishing for members over age 14
    • Fluoride treatments for children up to age 19
  • Diagnostic
    • X-rays (once every 36 months)
    • Bitewing X-rays (twice a year)
  • Restorative
    • Space maintainers and sealants for individuals under 14 years old

Major Services (see how you are covered)
Covered major services include:

  • Prosthodontics
    • Bridges
    • Crowns
    • Repair of bridgework and crowns
    • Dentures and partials
    • Repair of broken dentures and partials
    • Inlays
  • Oral Surgery
  • Endodontics (root canal therapy)
  • Periodontics (treatment of gum problems)

Orthodontics (see how you are covered)
Orthodontic benefits, including braces and related services during treatment, are provided for adults and children only when care is provided by a dentist located at a Boston University Dental Health Center.

Emergency Care
The plan defines emergency treatment as treatment needed to immediately alleviate pain or infection or to treat an injury.

Emergency treatment is covered as a basic service, regardless of where it is provided.

Emergency treatment does not include any final restrorations (ie., root canals,crowns and dentures).
