Unemployment Insurance Benefits

Boston University, having conformed with the provisions of sub-paragraph 2b of Section 25A of Chapter 152 of the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, is licensed to be a Self-Insurer by the Department of Industrial Accidents.

Self-Insurance Certificate

Employees of this business or organization are covered by Unemployment Insurance, a program financed entirely by employers. No deductions are made from your salary to cover the cost of this program.

If you lose your job, you may be entitled to collect Unemployment Insurance. Outlined below is the information you need in order to file a claim for Unemployment Insurance benefits.

Information on Unemployment Insurance Benefits
There are two ways to file your claim for Unemployment Insurance benefits.

Walk-in
You can file your claim in person. Unemployment Insurance Walk-In services are available at offices throughout Massachusetts. Services include assistance with filing a new claim for Unemployment Insurance, reopening an existing claim, or resolving problems with your current claim.

Unemployment Insurance orientation sessions are also held at these Walk-In Centers. Orientation includes information of your rights and responsibilities while collecting Unemployment Insurance, and on the services available to you, including reemployment assistance. Orientation sessions are open to all claimants--whether you file your claim in person or by telephone.

Teleclaim
You can call a TeleClaim Center. Unemployment Insurance (UI) services also available by telephone. You can file a new claim for Unemployment Insurance, reopen a current claim, be interviewed if there are issues that affect your eligibility, obtain up-to-date information on the status of your claim and benefit payment check, and resolve problems- all by telephone.
When you call your regional Unemployment Insurance TeleClaim Center, you will be asked to enter some information using the numbers on a touch-tone telephone before being transferred to an agent, who will take the information needed to file your claim.

Before You File
Your employer will give you a copy of the pamphlet: How to File for Unemployment Insurance Benefits, supplied by the Massachusetts Division of Employment and Training (D.E.T.). On the front of the pamphlet is a space to write down your employer's D.E.T. identification number. That number is shown at the top of this poster. Having the number will help in the filing of your claim.

Use the Toll-Free UI Information Line
Walk-In offices are located in every region of the state. Telephone numbers for Unemployment Insurance TeleClaim services have been assigned by geographic areas.

For the telephone number to use - or for the location of the nearest Walk-In Center - call the: UI Toll-Free Information Line 1-888-626-5553 (in the Boston area: 617-626-5553).

When you call, you will be asked to enter the first five numbers of the postal zip code where you live. Be prepared with a paper and pencil to write down the information you are given.
