Wireless network access is available throughout most of the Law Tower and in the Law Annex. In addition you can access the wireless network from outside the tower on the patio located off the first floor and in the area outside the main entrance on the ground floor.

Hardware requirements

Before you can connect, you will need to install hardware so that your laptop is capable of accepting a wireless connection. You will need either a built in wireless card or a wireless network adapter card that typically plugs into your laptop's PCMCIA slot.

Software requirements

Use SSID 123. If you are familiar with wireless settings, simply add in the SSID for the Boston University wireless network, which is: 123. If you would like more detailed instructions, please click on the appropriate link below.

Install Cisco VPN software on your computer. You will not be able to use our secured wireless network until you install the Cisco VPN client on your computer. Microsoft or Apple VPN software won't let you authenticate on our network. Please visit the PCSC's VPN Web site for free download links and installation instructions.

Connecting

  • Double-click the Cisco VPN icon.
  • Click Connect.
  • You will now be prompted for a username and password. Enter your own BU login name and your Kerberos password.
  • You may now use all network services as you normally would.

Printing

In order to print from your laptop to one of the library's printers you will need to configure your printer settings. Instructions for manual configuration for wireless printing are available on the Computers & Technology page. These instructions are good for Windows XP, MAC, and Vista operating systems.

Windows XP and Vista users: The Office of Systems and Technology has an executable (.exe) file that you can run to automatically setup the printers. Download the applicable file to your desktop, then double-click the application to run it.

Assistance

Wireless configuration assistance is available in room 1770 Monday through Friday from 10am to 2pm.
