top GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE COLLECTION

The Mathematics collection reflects the research and teaching interests of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). The collection is focused on pure and applied mathematics and mathematical statistics. The book and journal collections have strengths in the following areas: dynamical systems, geometry and topology, number theory, operations research and mathematical finance, mathematical physics, and probability and statistics.

The Mathematics collection primarily supports the undergraduate and graduate programs offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). The collection also supports the Undergraduate program in Mathematics offered by Metropolitan College. Undergraduate degree programs (BA) are offered by the Mathematics Department (CAS) with programs in calculus and mathematics. The concentration in mathematics includes pure and applied mathematics and statistics. Joint concentrations are offered in mathematics and computer science, mathematics and philosophy, economics and mathematics, and mathematics and mathematical education. A combined (BA/MA) degree program in mathematics is offered. Graduate Programs (MA and PhD) are also offered in mathematics and statistics; an MA is offered in mathematical finance. An MA in Actuarial Science is offered by Metropolitan College.

Faculty research interests are numerous and diverse. Algebra and number theory, applied mathematics, dynamical systems, geometry and topology, mathematical logic, mathematical physics, operations research and mathematical finance, and probability and statistics are of particular interest and are actively collected.

The research of the Department of Cognitive and Neural Systems (CNS) and the Center for Adaptive Systems is supported by the Mathematics collection. The research of the Center for BioDynamics and the Center for Mathematical Physics is also supported. The Mathematics collection generally supports research in all areas of science and engineering. Materials collected in mathematical statistics support research in both the sciences and the social sciences, especially economics, finance, and accounting programs.

top SCOPE OF COVERAGE

   1. Languages collected  (primary and selective) or excluded:   Materials are collected primarily in English and only occasionally in other languages.

   2. Geographical areas covered by the collections in terms of intellectual content, publication sources, or both, and specific areas excluded, as appropriate:   There are no limitations on geographical areas covered in terms of intellectual content. Publication sources are generally English language publishers.

   3. Chronological periods covered by the collection in terms of intellectual content, movements or schools, and specific periods excluded, as appropriate:   All chronological periods are covered by the collection in terms of intellectual content.

   4. Chronological periods collected in terms of publication dates, and specific periods excluded, as appropriate:   All chronological periods are collected in terms of publication dates, but emphasis is on recent publications and new research.

top TYPES OF MATERIALS

Collected: Books, conference proceedings, periodicals, and reference materials, including indexes and abstracts, bibliographies, encyclopedias, and handbooks.

Collected Selectively: Electronic resources, microforms, dissertations, and theses. Textbooks are collected very selectively (see Comments/Notes).

Not Collected: Solutions manuals and popular works.

top COMMENTS/NOTES

Textbooks are generally not collected except where the text has become a standard or classic work in the area or is aimed at advanced graduate students and researchers in a specific area of mathematics.
