Loans and Renewal

BU Faculty may check out most library materials for 19 weeks. Loans may be renewed twice, unless the item is recalled by another patron. Renewal is possible beginning the week before the due date. Using a PIN (personal identification number), you can access your patron record and renew your own loans. PINs can be added to your patron record by the staff at the circulation desk. You may also renew in person at the circulation desk or call 353-3734 for telephone renewal.

Faculty members are not charged normal overdue fees, but will be held responsible for Recall Fines, Reserve Fines, Replacement Charges and Billing Fees. Please read the fines description for more details.

Instruction

The ERL offers instruction to students that supports faculty teaching. Tutorials for individuals and small groups, as well as classroom instruction, covers the location and use of resources. Consultation for students engaged in research is also available.

Collaborative projects provide opportunities for the Librarian to work with faculty to infuse information literacy into their curricula. Tutorials for faculty are also offered.

Course Reserves

Please visit our Faculty Reserve Information website for detailed instructions before placing items on reserve.

Faculty may place materials on reserve for the use of students enrolled in their classes. Material on reserve is shelved in closed stacks behind the circulation desk and is usually limited to 2-hour in-library loans. Items from the library collection as well as personal materials, such as course handouts, lecture notes, journal articles, or sample exams, may be designated for reserve.

To place material on reserve fill out a reserve request form. The form is available at the circulation desk. A separate form is required for each course. Give the forms and any material being supplied to the staff at the circulation desk. To ensure that reserve material is available in time for your class, please note the following:

  • The library does not make copies, so please supply any multiples required.
  • A book charged out to someone may take 2-3 weeks to retrieve for reserve.
  • The purchase of a book at least takes 6-8 weeks.
  • Due to high volume reserves submitted at the beginning of each semester may take up to a week to be processed.

Otherwise, most items requested will be available for student use within 48 hours. A record will appear in the library catalog when an item has been processed. Select "Reserve Lists" from the main menu and search by course number or faculty name.

We will make every effort to ensure the best possible security for reserve material that is the personal property of faculty members, but cannot assume responsibility for lost or damaged items.
