    Book Review Index.1965-present
    An excellent general index to reviews of recent popular and academic books appearing in over 500 publications from the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia. BRI includes citations for reviews of any type of book, periodical, or reference work which is at least 50 pages long (poetry, children's and song books are exceptions to the 50 page rule.) The Index has two parts: the main section includes citations arranged alphabetically by the name of the book author; the second part is a title index.

    Book Review Digest. 1905-present.
    This work is mostly useful for identifying reviews of popular fiction and nonfiction rather than scholarly works. The title provides citations to and excerpts of reviews of current juvenile and adult fiction and nonfiction in the English language. To qualify for inclusion, the book must meet several criteria: published or distributed in the U.S. or Canada; a nonfiction book must receive reviews in two or more periodicals on the Digest selection list; a work of fiction must receive reviews from at least three of the periodicals on the list; reviews must appear within 18 months after the book was published. Generally no more than three or four reviews are excerpted, though a more complete list of review citations is included. The Digest has a subject-title index, which is cumulated annually and in five year cumulations.

    Although cumbersome to use, this multi-volume set provides important access to book reviews in non-English language periodicals. This index is arranged by the author of the work being reviewed. There is also an index to the titles of the works reviewed, the reviewers, subjects, and periodicals. A useful index for book reviews not generally covered in Anglo-American sources.

    To find book reviews in the print version: Find the Opera Recensa index, and look for the author of the book. This citation will direct you to a subject in the Index Rerum. In this volume, locate the subject and it will provide the citation for the review. The title of the periodical does not appear, only a number for the periodical listed in the Periodica index.

    A major multi-volume work, this set contains citations to reviews that appeared in more than 450 journals in the subject areas of history, political science and sociology. Entries in author volumes provide title and abbreviated citation to journal; entries in title volumes refer to the author entries. Does not include reviewers' names.

    Combined Retrospective Index to Book Reviews in Humanities Journals, 1802-1974.
    Companion set to the above entry, this collection provides citations to reviews in an additional 150 periodicals covering the fields of philosophy, classics, folklore, linguistics, music and primarily, literature. Includes reviewers' names but there is no index to reviewers.

    Current Book Review Citations, 1976-1982.
    Although this annual index only appeared seven times, it is an excellent and eclectic source for reviews of fiction, non-fiction and foreign-language titles published in approximately 1,000 periodicals.

    Index to Book Reviews in England, 1775-1800.
    The first work cites reviews of more than 3,000 titles published in 16 periodicals during the early years of book reviewing. The supplementary volume contains an index to reviews of almost 5,000 works of poetry, fiction and drama reviewed between 1775-1800. The reviews were almost always anonymous so no reviewer names appear.

    Index to Book Reviews in the Humanities, 1960-1990.
    Formerly a quarterly and later continued as an annual publication, this work indexed about 600 primarily English-language general and scholarly periodicals in the broad field of the "humanities," except for archaeology, religion and theology. An asterisk before a citation indicates that earlier volumes also reviewed the title. This impressive publication was indexed by one individual and provides helpful access to publications not generally indexed elsewhere, including some non-English titles. The term "humanities" was originally defined to include history and some social science but beginning with the 1970 volume, the term was restricted to art, biography, personal narratives and memoirs, drama and dance, folklore, language, literature, music, philosophy, travel and adventure.

    A five-volume index to book reviews appearing in the New York Times Book Review from 1896 through 1970. The New York Times Book Review is also covered in Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe (abstracts 1969-31 May 1980; full text 1 June 1980-present).

    Nineteenth Century Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature, 1890-1899; 1900-1922.
    This index covers fifty-one American and British periodicals (1890-1899) with supplementary coverage for 14 journals from 1900-1922. The volumes have author, subject and illustrator indices, in addition to a title index to short stories, novels, plays, and poems. Review references are cited under the author of the book reviewed.

    "Every year [they] review nearly 4,000 books for adults, more than 2,500 titles for children, more than 500 reference books and electronic reference tools, and 1,000 other audiovisual materials." The searchable site contains some back issues.

    Boston Review (also in print: Mugar AP2 N48)
    This "political and literary forum" includes a fair number of book reviews, primarily of works of poetry and fiction. Some back issues are available on the site.

    New York Review of Books (also in print: Mugar Newspaper and Microfilm)
    A biweekly interdisciplinary book review journal, whose site contains "a complete searchable index of the magazine's contents from 1963 to the present. The site currently contains the full text of all pieces published in the Review since November 1996."

    Southern African Review of Books (also in print: African Studies Z3518 B6S68)
    The SAROB is a "political and literary book review for South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Angola, Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana and Zambia." Some back issues are available online.

    Arts & Letters Daily
    This humanities-oriented site provides links to book reviews and essays appearing in a wide variety of quality journals available online. It is updated six days a week, and has an archive.

    Boletmn Cultural y Bibliografico (also in print)
    The publication of the Colombian Banco de la Repzblica appears four-times per year. It contains interdisciplinary book reviews.

    CAA.Reviews
    CAA Reviews, published by the College Art Association, is an online publication devoted to the peer review of new books relevant to the fields of art history..

    Education Review: A Journal of Book Reviews
    ER publishes review articles of recently published books in education, covering the range of educational scholarship.

    H-Net Reviews
    H-Net is an electronic forum for scholarly discussion in the humanities and social sciences. Reviews in the Humanities and Social Sciences is an online scholarly review journal. Each H-Net discussion network has its own review editor. Once posted to individual H-Net networks, reviews are posted to H-Review and archived on this site.

    History Today (also in print: Mugar D1 F51)
    Most of the book reviews appearing in the monthly history journal are available online.

    Law and Politics Book Review
    This is a searchable electronic journal, published by the Law and Courts Section of the American Political Science Association. There is also an list of reviews (alphabetical by name of author of book reviewed). All reviews in this journal are available on this site.

    The Medieval Review
    TMR (formerly the Bryn Mawr Medieval Review) publishes reviews of current books in medieval studies. "A board of distinguished review editors assists the editors in finding reviewers for books." All reviews published are searchable and available on this site.

    Although slow to arrive (it can take up to three years to compile), the bilingual bibliography can be quite useful. It organizes records as "general," related to linguistics, or by language. There is an index of authors, reviewers, editors, and people who are the subject of articles.

    FRANCIS. bulletin signaletique. 524, Sciences du langage. 1969-1995.
    In paper through 1995 (known as Bulletin signaletique. 524, Sciences du langage 1969-1990), this indexing and abstracting source organizes entries through a classification scheme (given in both French and English). The abstracts are written in French or English. There are four indices (which include book reviews) in the back of each volume: journal, concept, language group, author.

It covers studies in comparative literature published in all Western languages. Review references are entered both under the author of the book reviewed, and the author of the review.

    Grundri_ zur Geschichte der Deutschen Dichtung aus den Quellen.
    A comprehensive bibliography of German literature from the Middle Ages to 1830, this set includes some biographical and/or critical information on authors and their works; however, its primary value is in providing exhaustive information on primary sources, treatises, histories, biographical articles and critical articles. While each volume concludes with an index, the comprehensive index produced separately from the set and including the Neue Folge (see below) is very useful due to the inconsistent structure of the volumes. Review references follow the entry for the book reviewed.

    Index to Book Reviews in England, 1775-1800.
    The first work cites reviews of more than 3,000 titles published in 16 periodicals during the early years of book reviewing. The supplementary volume contains an index to reviews of almost 5,000 works of poetry, fiction and drama reviewed between 1775-1800. The reviews were almost always anonymous so no reviewer names appear.

    Literary Reviews in British Periodicals.
    These three volumes cover 1789-1797, 1798-1820 and 1821-1826, respectively. Reviews are entered under the name of the author or "anonymous". (Unfortunately, the volumes do not include a list of the periodicals indexed.)

    This is a monthly index, cumulated annually. It covers approximately 185 music journals, in all languages. Review references are entered under "Book reviews" and are arranged alphabetically by the author of the book reviewed.

    Abstracts of Music Literature or Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale, is an international bibliography of articles, festschriften, congress and conference reports, and dissertations in the field of music.

    This source covers the literature in theoretical and applied sociology. The print format includes book reviews in the International Review of Publications in Sociology (IRPS).
