E-books via BU package subscriptions
BU's Dissertations via Proquest Digital Dissertations. Most work submitted since ca. 1997 by Boston University students is available to current students, faculty and staff as free .pdf downloads. Be sure to include the words boston university among your search terms if narrowing your search for these.
NetLibrary. Currently over 3,600 e-books in all subject areas are available. Many of the books are pre-1923.
Oxford Scholarship Online. Over 1,000 e-books covering Philosophy, Religion, Political Science, and Economics and Finance.
Safari Tech Books Online. Safari Tech Books Online is a fully-searchable e-reference library of technical books covering programming or technical issues, including sound and visual areas.
SourceOECD. Includes access to books, related periodicals and statistical databases. International coverage of Education, Science and Economic trends and indicators.
E-books may also be available online for free or at relatively small cost.
Open access e-books
ACLS Humanities E-Book. Approximately 1500 academic press titles, browse by subject (author and title browse also available).
Bartleby.com. Free full text online access to reference, literature and verse books.
Internet Archive. Increasing numbers, daily, of scanned and excellently presented books are appearing here, most published prior to 1923. The audio and video offerings are wonderful, too. See also its 'Wayback' option.
Librarian's Internet Index. This site compliles a list of reputable websites that provide free access to electronic texts.
Identifying more E-Books as personal purchases
Books in Print is a good starting point. Use its Advanced Search to limit by e-book. You can usually determine if a book is offered through a subscription package, as a separate purchase, or both. Use BIP to be led to the publisher's web site for individual purchase.
