Online Facts: Books and Library Catalogs

  • Books in Print gives publication information for books, audio recordings and videos, currently available from American publishers. Also included is information for books that have gone out of print within the last ten years. Many records include brief reviews from sources such as Publishers Weekly, Choice, Kirkus Reviews, and Library Journal. (ChRiv-px)
  • Copyright Search is the Library of Congress's searchable database of holders of copyright over books, music, serials, documents etc. registered from 1978 to date. Can be searched by Title, Author, Claimant, Standard Numbers, etc.
  • Publisher's Catalogs. Additional information about books and publishing, including forthcoming books, can be found through publishers' catalogs, available on the Publisher's Catalogues Home Page.
  • BookWeb, from the American Booksellers Association, is a directory of bookstores that can be searched geographically or by specialty.
  • Library Catalogs

    • Federal Depository Library Directory a searchable directory of the nearly 1350 Federal Depository Libraries. Includes detailed address information, links to Websites, depository series holdings and personnel.
    • Hytelnet is Peter Scott's compilation of Telnet links to library catalogs worldwide. This site--currently maintained at Northern Lights.com--is organized by geographic region.
    • LibDex is Peter Scott's compilation of 17,000 Web based library catalogs, searchable or organized by geography, or by Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) vendor.

  • The On-Line Books Page presents over 15,000 online public domain English language books. The criteria for this site specify that there can be no charge for access to these publications, either in the form of advance fees, shareware fees, or requirement that the user provide personal information.

  • Internet Archive Texts Collection is an open access facsimile collection of over 175,000 texts.
  • WorldCat is the OCLC Online Union Catalog in a user friendly version. It contains more than 32 million records of items owned by libraries around the world, including the Boston University Libraries. Every item in the catalog has a listing of libraries owning it. It contains records for books, journals, musical scores, computer programs and much more.
