EndNote
What is EndNote?EndNote is bibliographic management software that organizes and manages book and journal article citations. Versions 3+ allow you to search databases using EndNote in place of the databases' native search interface. Note: Boston University students, faculty and staff may purchase EndNote at a discounted price from University Computers in Kenmore Square. The discounted price is $99 (students) $179 (faculty/staff). EndNote's Support Site offers an interactive tutorial, tip sheets, and other materials designed to familiarize users with the software. What Databases Interact With EndNote?EndNote can be used to manage citations from many different databases including indexes and databases licensed for use by Boston University students, faculty and staff. Citations can be imported into EndNote using:
Using EndNote FiltersEndNote filters may be designed to import bibliographic citations from almost any database.
Filters are available on the EndNote website or they can be created using the EndNote program. EndNote filters work with virtually all bibliographic databases. Using EndNote Filters: Notes for BU-Subscribed Databases & the BU Online CatalogBoston University Online Catalog Database: Innopac
If the Innopac filter is not listed, download it from the EndNote website and put it in the EndNote Filters folder. On a pc this folder is: C:\ProgramFiles\EndNote\Filters COS [Community of Science] Note: Commerce Business Daily/FedBizOps, COS Funding Opportunities, and Federal Register, may be downloaded in an easy to read ascii/text format, but there is no filter that can easily import these citations into EndNote. Databases: Agricola, US Patents
CSA: Cambridge Scientific Abstracts - Internet Database Service Databases: ARTbibliographies Modern, ASFA I: Biological Sciences and Living Resources, Criminal Justice Abstracts, ERIC, GeoRef, LLBA (Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts), National Criminal Justice Reference Service Abstracts, PAIS International, Philosophers Index, Political Science, Pollution Abstracts, Social Services Abstracts, Sociological Abstracts, Worldwide Political Science Abstracts

Using EndNote Connection FilesEndNote versions 3+ have a built-in Z39.50 client that allows you to:
A "connection file" is used to facilitate the connection between EndNote and a database. Connection files for many library catalogs and publicly accessible databases are included in EndNote. However, subscription databases, licensed for use by Boston University students, faculty and staff, require specially modified connection files. Listed below are the connection files for several licensed databases. For each database you wish to access, click on the appropriate file below and follow the download instructions Note: Z39.50 connections to the databases listed below are only allowed from computers directly connected to the University's campus network, or computers that have connected to the campus network modem pool using PPP, or computers that have connected to the BU Virtual Private Network [VPN]. Users of cable modems such as AT&T Broadband will want to use the VPN network. The Proxy Server will not work with Z39.50 connections, and can not be used by EndNote to connect to Z39.50 accessible databases. If you are using a PC, click the EndNote
connection file for your desired database. You will be prompted
to save the file. Select a "temp" directory [e.g.
C:\TEMP]. Exit from your web browser and use your Windows
browser to navigate to the Temp directory where you saved
the file. Double-click on the saved file [e.g. atla.exe].
The "winzip self-extractor" window will appear.
Click on the browse button and navigate to the folder that
contains your EndNote connection files. This folder will probably
be C:\PROGRAMFILES\ENDNOTE\CONNECTIONS. Select this location
as the "unzip to folder". Click on unzip. Close
the "winzip self-extractor" window. You are now
ready to try out the connection. If you are using a MAC, click the EndNote connection file for your desired database. You may be prompted for a location to save the file on your MAC. Select the directory that contains your EndNote connection files. If you are not prompted for a location, the file was probably automatically downloaded to your default download directory. Use the find command [see under the Finder's File menu] to search for the first few letters of the file. Then move the file to your EndNote Connections folder. The Macintosh files are in a "stuffit" format to allow for their easy transfer to your MAC. Your browser should unstuff the file automatically as it is downloaded. If the file is not unstuffed automatically, just double-click on it and the MAC will unstuff the file. Once the unstuffed file is located in the EndNote connections folder, you are ready to try out the connection. Note: These EndNote connection files are only for use by currently registered Boston University students, faculty and staff.
Using Browser "Search and Save" InterfacesListed below are database providers that use special "search and save" interfaces to import citations directly into EndNote. EndNote [Windows versions 4+] may require a special "export plug-in" to assist web browsers in exporting references directly into EndNote. First try importing citations without using the plug-in. If citations are not imported automatically, try the plug-in from Thomson. [The plug-in is listed for use with ProCite, but it should also work with EndNote.] Once you have installed the plug-in, use the newest version of Internet Explorer or Netscape to connect to your desired database from the Indexes and Databases list. Then follow the instructions below to import your selected citations into EndNote. EBSCO Databases: ATLA, Econlit, MLA Bibliography, PsycARTICLES, PsycINFO, SPORTDiscus
ENGINEERING VILLAGE Databases: Compendex, Inspec
PROQUEST Databases: ABI/INFORM, Dissertation Abstracts
THOMSON ISI Databases: Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, Web of Science
