What is EndNote?
EndNote is bibliographic management software that organizes
and manages book and journal article citations. Versions 3+
allow you to search databases using EndNote in place of the
databases' native search interface.
Note: Boston University students, faculty and staff may purchase EndNote at a discounted price from online stores such as Academic Superstore and JourneyEd.
What Databases Interact With EndNote?
EndNote can be used to manage citations from many different
databases including indexes and databases licensed for use
by Boston University students, faculty and staff. Citations
can be imported into EndNote using:
- filters
- browser "search and save" interfaces
- connection files
Note: Using EndNote with OpenURL -- Boston University drives access to library-licensed databases through an on-campus EZProxy server. We also use SFX, an Open URL link resolver. The combination of the two products means that the "EndNote OpenURL feature" will not work with our licensed databases.
Using EndNote Filters
EndNote filters may be designed to import bibliographic citations
from almost any database.
- Search a database from your web browser
- Save the search results to a file
- Use an import "filter" to bring the citations
into EndNote
Filters are available on the EndNote
website or they can be created using the EndNote program.
EndNote filters work with virtually all bibliographic databases.

Using Browser "Search and Save" Interfaces
Listed below are database providers that use special "search
and save" interfaces to import citations directly into
EndNote. EndNote [Windows versions 4+] may require
a special "export plug-in" to assist web browsers
in exporting references directly into EndNote. First try
importing citations without using the plug-in. If citations
are not imported automatically, try the plug-in from Thomson.
[The plug-in is listed for use with ProCite, but it
should also work with EndNote.] Once you have installed the
plug-in, use the newest version of Internet Explorer or Netscape
to connect to your desired database from the Indexes
and Databases list. Then follow the instructions
below to import your selected citations into EndNote.

EndNote versions 3+ have a built-in Z39.50 client that allows you to:
- Directly connect to Z39.50 compatible databases
- Search electronic indexes and databases
- Import bibliographic citations into EndNote
A "connection file" is used to facilitate the connection between EndNote and a database. Connection files for many library catalogs and publicly accessible databases are included in EndNote.
Note: Connection files are not available for subscription databases [such as Lexis-Nexis & Readers Guide] that are licensed for use by Boston University students, faculty and staff.
