Where do I find journal articles in my subject?

Alas, the Holy Grail of a single index or database covering all journals and subjects does not exist. Your first task will be to choose a reference source (or sources) that covers most of the journals likely to have articles you need.

To get started:

Use a faculty-suggested reading list or bibliography, if provided.
The bibliography of a current book on your topic will probably list a number of relevant articles. (Did you check your course Reserve list?)

Ask a Reference Librarian which online database or print index best suits your needs (an alphabetical list of all databases can be found at Electronic Indexes and Databases).

Consult either Electronic Resources by Subject or research guides to identify appropriate sources.

Remember:

Journal titles are listed in the online catalog, but NOT individual articles.

Oops.. my question really is,
once I know which journals have articles in my subject area, how do I find those journals
?

This is a sample results page from one of hundreds of different databases we provide.

Social Sciences Full Text
is a good starting point for topics ranging from abortion issues to international relations.
