A. Applied Linguistics Office

The office is open approximately 20 hours a week, staffed by the Applied Linguistics Program Assistants. The schedule is posted outside the door and is usually available on the answering machine.
The office contains mailboxes for all students. If you wish to receive mail through the program, it should be addressed to you c/o BU Program in Applied Linguistics, 64 Cummington St., Room 246, Boston University, Boston, MA 02215.
Other information is kept at the Office, for you to consult as you wish:
(1) Forms and other materials you will need to complete your requirements; (2) Advertisements of new books in the field; (3) Catalogs of other Boston University schools; (4) Catalogs of the other universities that participate in the Consortium (and thus whose courses are available for you to take); (5) Examples of student comprehensive exams.

The library is located at 621 Commonwealth Avenue, Room 112 and the reading room is Room 111. The library contains over 1,000 books donated by publishers who display material at the annual Conference on Language Development, as well as by students and faculty. The collection contains many recent volumes and important textbooks. Contributions (which are tax-deductible!) are welcome. We would like to have available all of the PhD dissertations of Applied Linguistics students. Students are requested to donate a copy of their thesis to the library upon completion. If you would like a key to the library and reading room, please talk to the Program Assistant.
C. Student Meeting Room/Lounge
Two doors down from the Program Office, in Room 242, is the Student Meeting Room. This room contains comfortable furniture, a microwave and small refrigerator, as well as two Macintosh computers and a printer, for the use of all students in the program. If you would like a key to this room, please talk to the Program Assistants.
D. Conference Office
Between the Program Office and the Student Meeting Room is the office of the Boston University Conference on Language Development, in Room 244. Please see the link on the Applied Linguistics home page. The phone number is 617/353-3085.

RESOURCES OF THE CONSORTIUM
Other member universities of the consortium are Brandeis University, Boston College, and Tufts University. You may enroll in courses given at any of these schools. To do so, you submit a petition that you may obtain from the Registrar (881 Commonwealth Avenue) which is signed by your adviser and Martha Khan, Graduate School Records Officer. It is then returned to the Registrar. The tuition is paid to BU. The only restriction is that the course must be relevant to the student's program. Students who are paying continuing student fees are not eligible. Tuition remission may be used toward courses at the member universities. You may also use the libraries at the Consortium member universities. If you wish to take books out, you will need a consortium library card, which may be obtained without charge at the Reference desk of the Mugar library. You will probably need a letter from a faculty member stating that there are specific books in the other libraries that you will need to use. A new card must be obtained each semester. |
