With this week's opening of the new movie drawn from two books that focused on Julia Child’s breakthrough publication on French cooking, there have been several articles reminiscing about Julia Child, with comments from her friends and compatriots.  Rebecca Alssid, our director of lifelong learning, is quoted in this article that ran in the Washington Post.

In today's Boston Sunday Globe's Career Development and Education Supplement, Roxolana Sawchuk is quoted in the lead article on certificate programs:

Boston University Metropolitan College & Extended Education offers a culinary arts program that takes just 14 weeks to complete. Founded in 1989 under the guidance of Julia Child and Jacques Pepin, this program runs twice each year, starting in September and January, and provides instruction through lecture, demonstration, and hands-on cooking experience. Students also learn nutrition, food writing, the economics of running a restaurant, the study of wines, sanitation training, and more.

"Even in today's economy, restaurants remain a generator of jobs and careers," says Roxolana Sawchuk, director of marketing at the BU Metropolitan College & Extended Education. "This intensive, hands-on cooking program is taught entirely by working chefs and experts in the food industry."

Freight and Volume Gallery in New York City has opened its new exhibit entitled “Heartbreak Hotel,” which features new work from twenty-one artists, among them, Arts Administration Program Director Daniel Ranalli's I Have Lost, from his CHALKBOARDS series. The exhibit runs July 16 - September 12, 2009.  For more information, please visit www.freightandvolume.com.  Daniel’s great solo show this past spring of the CHALKBOARDS series at Gallery Kayafas in Boston was favorably reviewed in the current issue of Art New England

Arts Administration Professor Rich Maloney serves as the President of the Board of Directors of an early music nonprofit organization, the Society for Historically Informed Performance. In this capacity he was interviewed extensively for an article that appeared in the Metrowest Daily Newspaper this past Thursday.

Sharon Sergeant, a MET alumna and instructor in CPE’s Genealogical Research program, appears in a major, fascinating feature on debunking fraudulent Holocaust memoires in the current issue of Bostonia.

During the Psychology Department Convocation this past Sunday, a MET student, Alexander Su, was one of two EMTs who saved the life of a father of one of the graduating students who had gone into cardiac arrest. Alex Su had trained at BU to be an EMT and was hired by BUEMS two days before this event for his first shift and first call as an EMT. He had been trained by a current student in our MCJ program, Ray McGrath.

An article in the Sunday Boston Globe on graduate certificates features one of our alumnae, Priscilla Claman, and quotes both of us on the value of pursuing an academic credential especially during this recession. 

In the Sunday Boston Globe, in an article on medical education, USS Director Ellen Peterson is quoted on our post-baccalaureate certificate in pre-medical studies. This program is "quite rigorous" -- often to the surprise of the ten students we admit annually.
