Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What are the (tax) advantages of paying for my permit through "payroll deduction"?
A. Due to the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century, employee parking deductions may be sheltered (not taxed) from federal, FICA, and state withholding taxes, and MBTA Pass deductions may be sheltered from FICA and federal withholding taxes. Up to $215.00 per month for parking expenses and $110.00 per month for public transportation expenses may be paid for with sheltered dollars.
Note: These tax benefits apply only to parking and the public transportation expenses of an employee when they are paid via payroll deduction. Parking and public transportation related deductions made by an employee for the use of another are excluded from these tax benefits. If your Parking or MBTA Pass deduction amount exceeds the maximum monthly limit, the excess amount will not be sheltered from taxation.
