Connect to the BU network via Ethernet

1. Get an Ethernet card
The first step in obtaining residence hall or office Internet access is to have a network card that utilizes 10BaseT Ethernet. Most new computers will come with a card built in (but you should check when purchasing just to make sure).

NOTE: Most residence halls use wired Ethernet (10BaseT). There is also wireless (802.11b) access available at many locations around campus, so you may want to have a computer that can utilize wireless access as well. See our wireless page for more information.

2. Get an Ethernet cable
A 10BaseT cable is sufficient to connect the Ethernet card to the Ethernet port located in your room or office. These cables can be bought at varying lengths, depending on how far away the computer is from the Ethernet port. Cables are sold at University Computers and in the ResNet Operations Center (at the beginning of the year). A 15-foot cable costs $5.

3. Configure your computer for Ethernet access

4. Make sure you are using virus protection software!
