James Devlin was educated at Notre Dame University and received his doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin in 1979. He has written on Whitehead's and Hartshorne's process metaphysics, especially the primacy of asymmetry, and has worked on Aristotle's Physics and Categories, using a method derived in part from the writings of Jaakko Hintikka.

Dr. Devlin has also worked and taught in applied computer science, teaching various programming languages, data models, and interconnection protocols. He also teaches a variety of introductory courses in the Philosophy department.
