The Department of Occupational Therapy and Rehabilitation Counseling at BU Sargent College is dedicated to promoting the health, well-being, and quality of life of persons experiencing disabilities.
Students in the occupational therapy and rehabilitation counseling programs receive outstanding preparation for roles in both traditional settings and newly emerging areas of need. Sargent College’s distinctive interdisciplinary, evidence-based approach combines challenging coursework, custom-tailored clinical placements, and the opportunity to collaborate with faculty who are leaders in their fields.
Students are encouraged to question, think critically, evaluate objectively, and search for new answers to exciting challenges in the evolving arena of health rehabilitation and social services. Our learning environment fosters the development of human values and effective interpersonal skills that are the mark of outstanding health professionals.
Programs in Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapists promote the health and well-being of individuals and populations through participation in meaningful daily activities (occupations), including self-maintenance, work, other productive activities, play, leisure, and socialization.
Program Focus: To prepare excellent practitioners who are prepared to provide occupation-focused, client-centered, and evidence-based services and are committed to leadership in practice.
Possible Career Paths:
- Practice as an occupational therapist in schools, rehabilitation centers, homes, community agencies, mental health facilities, general hospitals, private practice, and international service organizations.
- Provide consultation to other healthcare professionals, schools, agencies, and businesses.
- Teach in occupational therapy professional programs.
- Conduct research.

Programs in Rehabilitation Counseling
Professionals in Rehabilitation Counseling develop strategies that help people with physical, developmental, and psychiatric disabilities build the resources and skills to obtain satisfying work and lead fulfilling lives.
Program Focus: Preparing specialists in psychiatric rehabilitation, industrial rehabilitation, disability management, and vocational evaluation
Possible Career Paths: State vocational rehabilitation agencies, insurance companies, alcohol and other drug rehabilitation programs, mental health clinics, counseling centers, brain injury rehabilitation programs, and university teaching and research positions.
Undergraduate Programs in Rehabilitation Counseling
Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation and Human Services. The combination of professional courses, clinical placements, and guidance of experienced faculty make for a unique learning opportunity.
