Makechnie Study Center

The George K. Makechnie Study Center (MSC) (formerly known as the Media Resource Center) is located in room 237.  Recently renovated to become the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified space at Boston University, the MSC is a support facility that provides a broad range of media services for students, faculty and staff.  Services include classroom media support and media production resources for students and faculty as well as technical support and instruction. The MSC is most importantly a quiet study center for students of BU Sargent College.

Through the production of digital educational materials, the MSC supports and enhances teaching, learning and research in the health and rehabilitation fields. The new and improved Center houses four quiet study rooms for students to work in groups without disturbing others. These study rooms are equipped with hi-definition LCD panels for viewing course-related media and developing PowerPoint presentations for classes.  Additional resources available in the Center include a digital video editing suite, 11 computer workstations, copy facilities and a print queue station serving both the Center and the adjacent, state-of-the-art computer lab.

To Reserve a study room in the MSC

The MSC has 4 study rooms available for student use. These study rooms must be reserved. Students can reserve time in these rooms by going to this website: http://www.bu.edu/htbin/webevent/webevent.cgi . Look under SAR for the four study rooms and if you find one that has an opening when you need it, click on Add Event, then click on Submit Event and then fill out the form.

Computers

PCs with CD and DVD writers are available in the MSC for student, faculty, and staff use. In addition to word processing, graphics, spreadsheet, database management, and other popular kinds of software installed on these computers, faculty may request to have specialized curriculum software installed. The computers are also linked for Internet access.

Media SUpport At Sargent

The MSC provides equipment and technical support to students, faculty and staff.

Library/Reserve Desk Services

The MSC keeps a small library of reserve materials for BU Sargent College classes so students can conveniently access these materials.

Students can check out these materials for two hours at a time by presenting their BU ID card. A photocopier is available in the MSC for student use (This photocopier accepts coins, dollar bills and Convenience Points). For more information about how to add Convenience Points to your BU ID (Terrier) card, please see the Convenience Points Plan Information Screen.

Professors who wish to place items on reserve should download this form and bring it in along with their reserve items. In-depth instructions on how to place items on reserve in the MSC can be found here.

Faculty and Staff Support

We offer technical support to faculty and staff in a variety of different areas. Student computer support can be found at the PCSC.
