Background
Unit Mission
The aim of the MSW program is to educate professional social workers who will become leaders in a complex, diverse, and multicultural society. They will possess the knowledge and skills to address the needs and potentials of individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. SSW is committed to education that furthers social and economic justice in the urban environment and is especially concerned with empowerment of all oppressed groups. The school recognizes the ever-changing demands on the profession and strives to meet them through the highest quality teaching, scholarship, research, and practice. The School offers an integrated program of study, including clinical and macro social work methods. It emphasizes the engagement of personal and community strengths as fundamental to the understanding, treatment, and prevention of individual and social problems.
The Interdisciplinary PhD Program in Sociology and Social Work recognizes that solutions to pressing urban and clinical problems require the creative integration of social science theories and research methods with social work practice. This interdisciplinary program provides advanced training and research experience within a supportive context to enable practitioners, administrators, and policy specialists to deepen their knowledge and prepare for advanced careers in a multicultural society. The program’s objective is to educate and train its graduates to assume leadership roles in education, research, practice, policy, and advocacy, including diverse national and international social welfare organizations, research institutes, and universities.
