MSW Financial Aid

Sources of Financial Aid

The following funds are awarded to eligible full-time and part-time students. Awards are based on merit/academic performance and financial need as indicated below. Please note that the funds and amounts are subject to change.

*Please Note: Awards marked with an asterisk require a separate application in addition to the SSW Financial Assistance Application and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

All Full-Time Students
Scholarships
  • Urban Practice Scholarships - Several scholarships awarded to full-time continuing students based on merit. Awards are generally in the amount of full, one-half of tuition, one-third of tuition, and $6,000.
  • Louis Lowy Scholarship - Scholarships awarded to one or more continuing full-time students interested in the area of gerontology (amounts to be determined)
  • Golden Care Scholarship* - A scholarship in the amount of $700 awarded to a full-time continuing student for work in the area of geriatrics and aging.
  • Thomas D. Mackey III Memorial Scholarship* - A scholarship of up to $7,000 awarded to a full-time student who has experience in and/or a commitment to group work with people with the HIV virus.
  • Angelina Aliberti Ruggie Scholarship - A $1,000 scholarship awarded to a full-time student based on merit.
  • Naomi Osterman Scholarship* - A scholarship in the amount of $9,000 awarded to a full-time student with high merit.
  • Legacy Scholarship* - Several scholarships awarded to full-time students based on merit (amounts to be determined).
Employment

Federal Work Study - Available funds are provided by a federal allocation and a School of Social Work matching contribution. SSW recipients are selected by the SSW Office of Financial Assistance and must meet federal need and other criteria. SSW Work-Study students are paid monthly at a fixed amount. Job assignments, which are 10 hours per week, are coordinated with the student's class schedule. Students are placed in positions within the School of Social Work.

Loans

Federal Perkins Loan are federally funded, 5% interest loan awarded to full-time students based on need. Awards range from $2,000 to $6,000.

Full-Time Continuing Students
  • Barbara L. Locke Scholarship* - A $9,000 scholarship awarded to a continuing full-time student based on merit.
  • Josephine Lambert Scholarship - One $13,000 scholarship awarded to a continuing full-time ALANA student based on merit.
  • Tina G. Howell Scholarship - A scholarship ranging from $500 to $1,500 awarded to one or more continuing full-time students in Human Services Management based on merit.
  • Richard Cohen Scholarship - A scholarship up to $1,500 awarded to one or more continuing full-time Clinical Social Work Practice with Groups student (based on merit).
All Part-Time Students

Ruskin Scholarship - A $400 scholarship awarded to a part-time student based on merit.

  • Ann A. Ramsey Scholarship - Awarded to full- and part-time students based on merit (amounts to be determined).
  • Ina Morgan Scholarship - Several scholarships awarded to full- or part-time students based on merit (amounts to be determined).
  • Wendy Carol Byers Memorial Scholarship* - A scholarship of up to $5,000 awarded to a full- or part-time student with a disability.
  • Holly Margolin Zwerling Scholarship* - A $600 scholarship awarded to a full- or part-time student based on merit.
  • Rosemary Pazol Mundell Scholarship* - A $500 scholarship awarded to a full- or part-time parenting student.
  • Mary Louise Dillon Scholarship - A $2,000 scholarship awarded to a full- or part-time ALANA student based on merit.
  • Annette Schaffer Eskind Scholarship* - A scholarship in the amount of $5,000 awarded to a full- or part-time student based on merit.
  • Sybil M. Shapiro Memorial Scholarship* - A $1,500 scholarship awarded to a full- or part-time student based on merit.
  • Frances H. Gelber Scholarship - A $2,500 scholarship awarded to a full- or part-time ALANA student based on merit.
  • Hubie Jones Urban Social Work Scholarship - Several scholarships awarded to full- or part-time students based on merit (amounts to be determined).
  • Louise Frey Fund for Multicultural Education Scholarship* - A scholarship of up to $1,500 awarded to a full- or part-time student based on merit.
  • Boston University Whitney Young Fellowship - Boston University annually awards a Whitney M Young, Jr. Fellowship in recognition of the outstanding contributions made by Whitney M. Young, Jr., particularly in the fields of social work, urban studies and Afro-American Studies. An applicant should be an entering or continuing student who is a U.S. citizen. The recipient of the award will be selected on the basis of having displayed academic proficiency in a field related to race relations or urban problems. The fellowship provides a stipend for living expenses, Boston University health insurance, plus a scholarship for full tuition and fees for one year. All applicants must provide the completed application form to the Committee prior to the deadline below. Continuing students must provide a current, official transcript from Boston University. Entering students must provide official transcripts and GRE reports. All applicants must obtain references from three referees, who should complete the attached forms and provide them separately to the Commitee. All materials must be received by February 15, 2008. The application, your letter of Admission, transcripts, GRE report and all references should be sent to: Whitney M. Loans

  • Federal Direct Stafford Loan
    Loans available to students with eligibility based on the results of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Student applying for a loan may complete the Federal Direct Stafford Loan request form (link to form A).
