The Boston University School of Social work (BU SSW) seeks nominations and applications of outstanding candidates to serve as the next Dean of the School. BU SSW is one of the nation’s premier schools of social work, with a critical focus on an Urban Mission and preparing masters and doctoral level students for a wide range of practice, program leadership, and academic assignments.
The Dean is the chief executive and administrative officer of the School of Social Work. As the chief executive officer of the School, the Dean has overall responsibility for supporting and enhancing the teaching, service and research activities of the faculty.
BU SSW has numerous strengths: a strong faculty with an outstanding research record; a cohesive faculty that supports the Urban Mission; new, energetic faculty; a nationally recognized master’s program with a number of specialty certificate programs; interdisciplinary programs which link the School of Social Work with other outstanding graduate programs across the University; and strong support from the new President and Provost.
Among the new Dean’s opportunities will be fulfilling the School’s strategic goals which include: enhancing the School’s visibility as a premier social work school with an interdisciplinary focus in the masters and doctoral programs; promoting the School’s educational niche and unique role by virtue of specialty curriculum offerings; strengthening the intellectual environment by increasing the number of academic forums available to students and faculty; increasing the national and international reputation of schools of social work; expanding faculty writing, publishing, and funded research activities; increasing cross-disciplinary activities; attracting and retaining excellent students and scholars from diverse backgrounds; and fundraising to support the School’s activities.
To achieve the School’s goals the new Dean should have a strong record of leadership, fundraising, research and scholarship, and active involvement in professional organizations and/or community-based initiatives. Evidence of commitment to diversity and social and economic justice is essential.
The Dean must have an earned a masters and a doctoral degree, at least one of which must be in social work or a social work-related field such as social welfare policy.
