Project Description:
This randomized controlled trial with 120 counselors and their
supervisor from substance abuse treatment agencies across the country
assesses the effectiveness of a Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Web
course compared to a manual-based CBT training on several counselor outcomes:
(a) knowledge of CBT, (b) attitudes toward evidence-based practices,
(c) attitudes toward CBT interventions, and (d) use of specific CBT strategies
(assessed through audio-taped client sessions). The study uses an experimental
and delayed control group design. The Web course, using state-of-the-art
technology, has 8 modules inclusive of 16 hours of online training and
off-line assignments and is available to counselors 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.
The Web course provides numerous handouts and access to a discussion
board, engages the user with interactivity and exercises, and teaches
through multiple formats, resulting in a unique learning opportunity
for counselors. Course content, building on NIDA's CBT treatment manual,
was developed by experts from several institutions.
