Project Description:
This five-year longitudinal research effort examines the effectiveness
of adding culturally sensitive intensive prevention case management to
standard community health outreach services among a target population
of substance-abusing men who have sex with men, primarily men of color.
Tapestry Health provides the intervention services. A quasi-experimental
research design with a comparison group is used to determine the likelihood
that this population of adult MSMs will have: (1) reduced past-month
use of alcohol or drugs; (2) reduced alcohol or drug consequences; (3)
improved self-sufficiency through employment or other legal income; (4)
improved social support and functioning; (5) improved health and mental
health status; and (6) improved treatment efficacy including appropriate
service utilization, improved program retention and increased program
completion. In addition, the study will explore whether participants
increased rates of condom use; HIV, STI, and Hepatitis testing; and mental
health and substance abuse treatment utilization.
