Boston University offers many services and resources for Summer Term students. Following are a few things you'll want to make sure you explore while you're here.

Classrooms

Summer classes are held throughout the Boston University Campus. The 3 letter code on your class schedule will tell you the building in which your class is located.

Library Services

There are 17 libraries on campus, holding 2.2 million volumes and more that 30,698 periodicals. Mugar Memorial Library is the primary library for study, teaching, and research in the humanities and social sciences for Boston University.

Student Union

The George Sherman Union, located at 775 Commonwealth Avenue, has facilities that include a food court with varied food options, video games area, conference auditorium, and a U.S. Post Office. University-sponsored groups and organizations are able to reserve conference rooms for meetings and seminars. Films, lectures, art exhibitions, and recitals are held there frequently. Fitness and Recreation Center

Boston University's Fitness and Recreation Center contains approximately 270,000 square feet of space, supporting physical education, non-credit courses, intramurals, club sports, student organizations, and much more. For information on summer membership, go to Member Services, located at the front entrance of the Fitness and Recreation Center at 915 Commonwealth Avenue. Office of Information Technology

Students at Boston University have access to a wide variety of computing and network resources for communication, coursework, instruction, and research. The Office of Information Technology (www.bu.edu/it, it@bu.edu, 617-353-2780) provides general-access facilities for the entire University community. Their main office, located at 111 Cummington Street, is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

The Student Link and ACS E-mail

The Student Link (www.bu.edu/studentlink) is your personal and secure online link to student records at Boston University. You can use the Student Link to view and change personal information such as your address, view your student account, register for classes, check your grades, confirm classroom locations, and much more.

To use the Student Link, you must have a BU login name and Kerberos password, which you can create when you apply for an ACS (Academic Computing System) e-mail account. You can do this by bringing your Boston University ID card to the I/O Window, located in the Office of Information Technology's PC lab in the lower level of 111 Cummington Street. The link is designed and supported by University Information Systems (UIS). Access to your ACS e-mail is available via the Web (www.bu.edu/webmail), IMAP, and various local clients (see www.bu.edu/pcsc/email).

Please remember that your Kerberos password provides access to your e-mail and important personal information. Safeguard your Kerberos password and do not give it to anyone. Giving your password to anyone or using anyone else's password is prohibited by Boston University's Conditions of Use and Policy on Computing Ethics (www.bu.edu/computing/policies). Any violation of this policy may be cause for disciplinary action.

Computing and Network Resources

All Summer Term students have access to the Office of Information Technology's PC labs, located in the lower level of 111 Cummington Street and on the first floor of Mugar Memorial Library. Many Schools and Colleges at the University also have computer labs available to students enrolled in their courses.

Boston University offers access to a wireless network infrastructure at a number of broadly accessible Charles River Campus locations, including the libraries, dining facilities, and the George Sherman Union. Service is also available in many other academic and administrative facilities throughout the campus. As wireless technology matures, we expect to provide more pervasive coverage throughout the Charles River Campus. All wireless transmissions are secured and encrypted through use of a Virtual Private Network (VPN), which requires installation of a special client and authentication with a BU login name and Kerberos password. Information Technology's Consulting Services department offers assistance in all areas of computing. Staff and student consultants provide in-person support at the Help Desk, adjacent to the central PC lab located in the lower level of 111 Cummington Street. The Help Desk also maintains several PCs and Macs for self-paced training on many popular applications. Optical scanners are available for scanning photos, graphics, and text. The Help Desk is open seven days a week, including evenings, and offers help with ACS and related services, such as e-mail.

Two of Information Technology's departments, the Personal Computing Support Center (PCSC) and University Computers, provide a variety of services for students who own personal computers. The PCSC is dedicated to helping all Boston University faculty, students, and academic staff use Windows and Macintosh computers effectively. They provide consulting, hands-on training for many popular applications, technical support, file recovery, and file translation. Information on downloading free anti-virus and anti-spyware software (both are required to connect to the campus network) is available at www.bu.edu/pcsc/safe. The PCSC's walk-in support facility is located in Room B19, in the lower level of 111 Cummington Street. University Computers (UC), a department of the Office of Information Technology, offers computer systems, accessories, and software at special, educational prices. Coordinating product research with the specific requirements of Boston University's Schools and Colleges, UC strives to provide products and services that match the needs of students, faculty, and staff at the best possible prices.
