  1. What is the difference between High School Honors and Summer Challenge?

    High School Honors is a six-week, credit bearing program for students entering their senior year of high school. Summer Challenge is a two-week, non-credit program for students entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year of high school.

  3. What year do I need to be entering in 2009 to participate in High School Honors?

    You need to be entering your senior year in fall 2009.

  5. What is the difference between General Honors and Research Internship Program?

    General Honors students take two classes for credit alongside current college students. Research Interns spend about 40 hours a week performing research in a lab under the guidance of a faculty mentor.

  7. Is this a commuter or residential program?

    Students can either commute or stay on campus as part of the High School Honors Program.

  9. Can international students participate?

    International students are eligible to participate in the General Honors track of the program. They need to obtain a student visa in order to enroll. The Research Internship is not open to international students. Please see the International High School Students page for more information for international students.

    Applications will be available on December 15.

    Approximately 130 students attend the High School Honors Program.

  15. How competitive is the Research Internship Program in the High School Honors program? About how many students are accepted into the Research Internship Program?

    The Research Internship in Science and Engineering is a highly competitive program. We usually receive over 100 applications for about 30-40 spots.

    Yes, we do. The forms will be available December 15.

  19. What if I have not yet taken the PSAT, SAT, or ACT?

    A PSAT, SAT, or ACT score is required for admission. If something has prevented you from taking one of the tests, please indicate why in your application materials.

    Yes, you need to send in both a statement of purpose and a written essay.

  23. What are the admissions criteria?

    We give the most attention to your high school transcript. Our students last year had an average 3.7 GPA and 1270 SAT score. Positive recommendations, extracurriculars, and a well-written essay are also taken into account. Placement in Research Internship Program also depends on space availability.

  25. Can I check and see if my application is complete?

  27. How long after I send in my application should I expect a response?

    We work to get responses out within 2 to 3 weeks after receipt of your completed application. Decision letters on Research Internship applications begin being sent out in mid-March and may take longer than 3 weeks.

  29. Once accepted into High School Honors, am I required to go to the program? Is acceptance binding?

    Acceptance is not binding. You can either accept or decline our offer of admission.

    Classes vary in length depending on how many days a week they meet. The hours the class meets are listed at the end of each course description.

    General Honors students must take two courses, no more, no less.

    You will learn about your lab placement before you accept your spot but not your project. You will learn about your project once you begin in the lab.

    No, we do not offer SAT preparation courses.

  49. Will the credits I earn in the summer High School Honors program be transferable?

    Most colleges will accept Boston University credit. You need to speak with your school, however, for confirmation.

    No, we do not go as a group to visit area colleges, but you may arrange your own visits during your free time.

  53. Is there a curfew?

    Yes. The curfew is 11:00 pm during the week and 12:00 am on weekends.

  55. Are students free to leave campus?

    All planned activities are mandatory, however during the free time, students can leave campus as long as they have at least one other student with them and they let a program assitant know they are leaving.
