Although the pace on campus slows during the summer, there is still plenty going on. On the arts front, the Boston Young Contemporaries Exhibition is back at Boston University for its third straight year. The juried exhibition, which opened on July 18 at the 808 Gallery on Commonwealth Avenue, showcases artwork by students from 11 Master of Fine Arts and post-baccalaureate programs across New England.

“Boston Young Contemporaries is a group of students in the New England area who attend M.F.A. schools,” says Erika Hess (CFA’09), events coordinator for this year’s exhibition. The BYC’s goal is to build a sense of community among these young artists getting ready to exhibit their work, according to Hess. Formed three years ago at the suggestion of John Walker, a College of Fine Arts professor of painting, Boston Young Contemporaries is based on a similar program started by Walker and fellow art students years ago when they were in art school in England.

 

Chief curator Ron Nadarski (CFA’09) says this year’s show includes approximately 160 works in a variety of media, among them painting, sculpture, photography, installation, and video, by 90 artists.

Along with Hess and Nadarski, Holly Veselka (CFA’09), director of the Boston Young Contemporaries, helped organize the exhibition and install the artwork.

The Boston Young Contemporaries Exhibition is free and open to the public and will run through August 22. The 808 Gallery, 808 Commonwealth Ave., is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m.
