The opportunity to imagine and direct one’s own curriculum is part of the education we receive in UNI. The plastic nature of the program enables each student to shape a study; each concentration is a creative expression. When I completed my thesis, I was surprised that my research and argument had not arrived at an end, or a set of answers, but instead had raised further questions for me. I am excited that, in UNI, I have begun a search, not finished one.

Deciding to join the University Professors Program is one of the best academic decisions I have ever made. It has given me the opportunity to pursue my intellectual interests without bureaucratic limitations. Looking at friends who have dealt with distribution requirements and prerequisites throughout their entire college careers, I am grateful that my own experience has been all the richer and more fruitful for the lack of boundaries.
UNI has given me the opportunity to dive into subjects with which I am not familiar, without having to spend semester after semester in introductory courses. Thus, I have been able to shape my view of my first passion, philosophy, by my studies in anthropology, physics, and international relations. Moreover, the freedom that UNI affords students is indicative of a trust that it will be used to pursue unique intellectual paths and that we as students are able to handle the difficult work that comes with such autonomy. Knowing that the faculty and administrators in UNI have such faith in my fellow students and me has motivated me to follow my own course of study and to meet the challenges that such a course of study brings.
Lastly, UNI has provided me with the opportunity for some incredible experiences. I have studied conflict and community development in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and tourism in the Republic of Ireland. I have worked with leading scholars and talented students, and have had the resources of a large research university available to me in a smaller setting. My UNI education has been both fulfilling and challenging, and I strongly recommend it to anyone looking for a meaningful and unique undergraduate experience. |
