Battery Safety Recalls

Over the past few months news stories have circulated regarding defective
notebook batteries. These batteries are reported to have overheated
and in a few cases caught on fire. University Computers and Boston
University take your concerns about these defective batteries seriously.
On this page we list the details of the various manufacturer safety
recalls, along with links to web pages with detail instructions
for free replacements. We encourage all owners of potentially affect
models to use this resource to learn if you are at risk and how
to receive your replacement battery.
Apple:
Apple has determined that certain lithium-ion batteries containing cells manufactured by Sony Corporation of Japan pose a safety risk that may result in overheating under rare circumstances.
The affected batteries were sold worldwide from October 2003 through August 2006 for use with the following notebook computers: 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4.
Apple is voluntarily recalling the affected batteries and has initiated a worldwide exchange program to provide eligible customers with a new replacement battery, free of charge.

Dell:
Dell has identified a potential issue associated with certain batteries sold with Dell Latitude™, Inspiron™, XPS™ and Dell Precision Mobile Workstation™ notebook computers. In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and other regulatory agencies, Dell is voluntarily recalling certain Dell-branded batteries with cells manufactured by Sony and offering free replacements for these batteries. Under rare conditions, it is possible for these batteries to overheat, which could pose a risk of fire.
Potentially affected batteries were sold with the following models of Dell notebook computers or separately as secondary batteries:
- Latitude: D410, D500, D505, D510, D520, D600, D610, D620, D800, D810
- Inspiron: 500M, 510M, 600M, 700M, 710M, 6000, 6400, 8500, 8600, 9100, 9200, 9300, 9400, E1505, E1705
- Precision: M20, M60, M70, M90
- XPS: XPS, XPS Gen2, XPS M170, XPS M1710

Lenovo:
Lenovo and IBM Corporation, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission and other regulatory agencies, have announced the voluntary
recall of certain lithium-ion batteries manufactured by Sony Corporation. In
the interest of public safety, Lenovo will offer customers free-of-charge replacement
batteries for all recalled batteries.
IBM and Lenovo sold these Sony batteries in systems listed below between
February 2005 and September 2006. Customers who bought one of the following
systems may have a battery subject to this recall:
- ThinkPad R Series (R51e, R52, R60, R60e)
- ThinkPad T Series (T43, T43p, T60)
- ThinkPad X Series (X60, X60s)
- ThinkPad Z Series (Z60m, Z61e, Z61m, and Z61p)
Additionally, since these batteries can also be used with ThinkPad
T4x Series or ThinkPad R5x Series systems, customers who ordered an
extra battery or received a replacement battery for any ThinkPad T4x
or ThinkPad R5x Series notebook PC between February 2005 and September
2006 may also have a battery subject to recall.

Update: March 1, 2007:
In cooperation with the
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Lenovo Inc.
is recalling an additional 208,000 lithium-ion 9-cell extended-life
batteries. These batteries were manufactured for use with ThinkPad
notebook computers that shipped worldwide between November 2005 and
February 2007. In the interest of public safety, Lenovo will offer
customers free-of-charge replacement batteries for all recalled batteries.
Lenovo sold the batteries with new notebook computers or as optional
or replacement batteries on the models listed below. If a recalled
ThinkPad battery pack receives a strong external impact, the battery
pack may overheat, posing a potential safety hazard to users.
- ThinkPad R Series (R51e, R52, R60, R60e)
- ThinkPad T Series (T43, T43p, T60)
- ThinkPad X Series (X60, X60s)
- ThinkPad Z Series (Z60m, Z61e, Z61m, and Z61p)
These models may have shipped with either 6-cell or 9-cell batteries;
only the 9-cell batteries with the part number FRU
P/N 92P1131 are
being recalled.

Sony
Sony initiated a global replacement program for certain lithium-ion
notebook computer battery packs manufactured by the company to address
the concerns of customers over the recent over-heating incidents
in certain notebooks manufactured by companies other than Sony. This
voluntary replacement program only applies to certain VAIO models
and serial numbers of the VAIO battery packs:
- 1. Models with which the battery packs are included:
Certain models of VAIO VGN-FE series and VGN-T series are affected.
- 2. Battery pack model sold separately as extra battery packs: VGP-BPS3A

Toshiba
Toshiba has identified a problem with some of the batteries in Toshiba
portable computers manufactured between March and May of 2006. The affected
batteries simply stop working, i.e. they stop accepting a charge, and
they no longer supply power to the computer. They do not overheat,
or pose any safety related issue or concern.
The affected batteries were sold with several Toshiba portable computer
models, and were also sold as accessories. The problem has been fixed
by the third-party battery vendor, and batteries manufactured since
June 1, 2006 are not affected by this problem.
Affected Batteries in Toshiba Portable Computers
The affected batteries were included in certain of the following Toshiba
portable computer models. Only some - not all - of the batteries used
in these models are affected.
- Satellite A100/A105
- Satellite M50/M55
- Satellite M100/M105
- Tecra A6
- Tecra A7
Affected Batteries Sold Separately as Accessories
Some - not all - of the Toshiba accessory batteries with the following
three battery model numbers are affected by the problem:
- PA3399U-2BRS
- PA3400U-1BRS
- PA3465U-1BRS
