How it Works

If you're buying a Back-to-School bundle, all you have to do is let your Sales representative know that you’re interested in adding the New Computer Setup to your bundle. We will take care of everything. Whether you’re getting your computer shipped to you, or you’re picking it up at the store, all the installations and upgrades will already be applied.

If you're not getting a bundle, we can still setup your new computer for you. Let your Sales representative know you’d like to purchase the Setup, and he or she will pass on your computer for us to take care of. We will give you a call when it's ready for pickup. In most cases we will be able to complete the customization within 24 to 48 business hours.

If you already have your new computer, and you didn't get it from University Computers, that’s OK too. Just come straight back to Technical Services and a Technical Consultant will check you in. Make sure to bring with you any accessories or software you want installed as part of the setup. We'll give you a call when your computer is ready for pickup. In most cases we will be able to complete the customization within 24 to 48 business hours.

Please note that you will have to purchase and provide all of the software and accessories you want us to install. However, if you are purchasing a bundle through BU’s Back to School program, we will automatically use/install all the accessories and software that are included in the bundle price. Also, if you are a BU affiliate, you are covered under BU’s site license of MacAfee antivirus software as long as you work or study here at Boston University, so we will automatically install that for you. We will also automatically install Microsoft’s Windows Defender as your anti-spyware program, unless otherwise requested by you. (You must provide any alternate anti-spyware program.) You can find out more about Windows Defender at www.microsoft.com

Preventive Maintenance Plan

We are now offering preventive maintenance plans to our customers.

Immunize your new machine so it stays healthy.
We will give your computer a tune-up once each semester (Fall and
Spring) for 1 year to help guard against the threat of viruses, ad-ware, spyware, and other Internet-based attacks, many of which may lead to more serious problems, such as identity theft. We will also make sure that your computer is running as fast as possible by optimizing Windows Settings, cleaning and updating Windows and running utilities.

Think of it as an oil change for your computer.
As part of the maintenance plan, we will clean out the computer to make sure proper air flow is getting through the unit to the processor to prevent hard drive and computer failure. Dust build-up can wreak havoc with your sensitive computer components.

Preventive Maintenance Plan (1 year)
Back-to-School Special Through Sept. 8, 2008 $149
After Sept. 8, 2008 $199

Why Sign up for the Preventive Maintenance Plan?
New viruses and hacks are coming out all the time, trying to take advantage of your computer. This plan will help ensure that your computer has the latest updates and patch fixes to help combat these ongoing threats. The best defense is a good offense, after all. And even software configuration issues or temporary internet files and cookies can slow down your computer, keeping it from working at its full potential.

It’s always good to provide your hardware with a little TLC, as well. Using air cans or other external solutions can sometimes only aggravate problems, blowing dust around instead of eliminating it. Technical Services technicians can actually go inside your computer and completely eradicate those pesky dust mites.

This plan will help keep your computer in good working order, whether you have a desktop, laptop, PC or Mac.

How it Works

Contact Technical Services to purchase a plan. If you’re buying a Back to School bundle, you can also add a Preventive Maintenance plan while working with a Sales staff member.

Then simply bring your computer down to Technical Services when you’d like to redeem your tune-up. You can bring it down once in the fall semester, and once in the spring, for one year. You can choose to come in right at the beginning of each semester, to get a good start. Or if you want to come by in the middle, or right before the end, to make sure you’re in tip-top shape for finals, you can do that, too. It’s up to you how you want to use your plan.

When you come in, we'll check in your computer, and have it ready for pick-up within 48 hours or sooner. No proof of purchase required – your computer’s serial number will already be entered in our database as a computer that’s covered by our Preventive Maintenance Plan!

And that’s it! While Technical Services would never purposefully erase or alter your documents, it is always wise to ensure your backups are current before getting your computer serviced.

Please note that we can only cover hardware that we can service under the Preventive Maintenance Plan. If you’re not sure if we can work on your computer, please go HERE to see our list of supported hardware, or e-mail us at uctech@bu.edu. We will be happy to answer any questions you might have.

The pricing for this plan does not include the repair of any hardware problems that might be discovered while the computer is being serviced. It also does not include the cost of an anti-virus or anti-spyware program in the event that a computer is found to be missing these programs altogether.

At this time we are only offering this plan for personal computers belonging to BU affiliates. Departmental computers can be covered under our annual service contracts. Non-BU customers may have their computers serviced under the normal labor rates.
