Uploading Files
Certain versions of the Internet Explorer browser are not compatible with the Vista platform. Compatible browsers for Windows users include Internet Explorer Version 6 (SP1 or SP2), Internet Explorer 7 as well as Firefox versions 1.5 and 2.0. We do recommend that all Windows users download and use Firefox 2.0 instead of Internet Explorer as it generally tends to have fewer problems.
You could also be having a Java-related problem. Please check that you have a compatible version of Java by running the Browser Check. Instructions on checking your version of Java as well as instructions on getting the correct version can be found on our Java settings page.
If you have a compatible version of Java and need to upload a file
If you have a compatible version of Java, and are seeing a box with a red x in the "Add Attachment" window, instead of the "My Computer" icon, the following steps should allow you to add attachments:
- Move your mouse cursor slowly below where the "MyComputer" icon should be. You will see the cursor turn into a link pointer (the hand with the index finger pointing up).

- When the cursor changes into a link pointer, left-click and you'll see a new screen with a link that says "Click here to select files individually".

- When you click that link you'll be able to browse the files on your computer and upload them without using the Java My Computer applet
Please Note:
Vista can only add attachments that do not have special characters in the file name. Please ensure that your file names are short (no more than 15 characters long), and contain only letters, numbers, dashes "-", and underscores "_". File names cannot contain spaces, quotation marks, or punctuation.
Also, if you have Norton Anti-virus installed on your computer, this can also interfere with uploading attachments. Boston University offers McAfee Anti-Virus free to all students with a BU login name and password. Instructions on how to remove Norton and install McAfee are detailed in our anti-virus page.
