Description

While most content on your web site is public information, you sometimes need to restrict access to certain information. For instance, a department's web site may include information to be seen exclusively by that department's faculty.

In this class, you will learn how to restrict access to files in web sites on www.bu.edu and people.bu.edu. You can limit access to the BU community, specific BU departments, individuals or statuses (student, faculty or staff), or specific individuals worldwide. You can view the course outline and course materials online.

Benefits

After completing this class, you will be able to:

  1. create a subdirectory for documents you want to restrict.
  2. create an .htaccess file to restrict access to that subdirectory to the specific group of users you choose.
  3. upload the .htaccess file to the restricted subdirectory.
  4. login to your restricted site.

Prerequisites

Dreamweaver: Introduction (or equivalent knowledge). Experience with FTP and Telnet. An account on people.bu.edu, or access to a site on www.bu.edu, is recommended.
